For a long time people looked at Baritone guitars as if they were made just for metal. While the extended scale length does help for those high gain aggressive styles it also has massive benefits from softer and smoother styles as well. The PRS SE2 77 Semi Hollow Soapbar is a baritone guitar made for a more diverse range of styles.
What Is Baritone?
A Baritone guitar is simply one with a longer scale length and that is tuned much lower than a standard guitar. The general idea is that once you pass 27" scale length you are getting in to baritone territory. With a baritone guitar you can tune lower without losing that tight string tension required for accurate playing.
Tuned to B standard (B-E-A-D-F#-B) you are sitting in between bass and standard guitar territory straight out of the box. Plenty of artists have taken advantage of baritone guitars throughout the years including Joe Bonamassa, Mike Mushok and Dave Mathews as it adds an interesting new element to your sound that is hard to get with a standard six string.
PRS SE are known for building some incredible guitars and the 277 Semi Hollow is no different. With a mahogany back topped with flamed maple and a mahogany neck finished with a rosewood fretboard this guitar has the same quality feel and signature PRS tone we love.
As this is a semi hollow guitar it does have a powerful low end that sustains beautifully throughout the body along with the low mids that keep this guitar punching through any mix.
PRS have designed all of their hardware on the SE line and the 277 features some of the best parts yet. The tuners and bridge both follow the same designs found on PRS guitars of the last few years but obviously adjusted slightly to suit the thicker strings and longer scale of this guitar.
They even design their own pickups and these PRS SE Soapbars sure do kick out some quality tones. As these are P90 style soapbars they may not have the high gain output or fast attack humbucker users will be used to. However the sweet and smooth tone of single coils is a beautiful thing on this guitar and the breakup is smooth with a hint of aggression.
Here's what PRS say about the SE 277 Semi Hollow
The PRS SE Custom 22 Semi-Hollow has musical midrange and outstanding resonance. The semi-hollow body provides an airy, sweet tone but with a twist of the tone knob, the dual humbuckers can get plenty of bright spank. Additional appointments include a maple top, mahogany back and neck, rosewood fretboard, and dual humbuckers with a volume, tone, and 3-way toggle electronics configuration. The SE Custom 22 Semi-Hollow is both versatile and comfortable, making it a reliable tool for professionals, a solid choice for beginners, and a welcome addition to any arsenal.
