PRS’ reputation has always been impeccable. Since 1985, they have produced high-quality instruments that have been played by countless artists of all different styles. Combining beauty with functionality, their guitars are renowned for their looks, tones, and playability. Every time you pick up a PRS, you will feel inspired.
The P22 is similar to the Custom 22 aesthetically, with its elegant double-cutaway body, set-neck construction and high-grade electronics and hardware. However, the P22 is equipped with a collaboratively designed piezo system between PRS and LR Baggs, letting you achieve some convincing acoustic sounds.
Over a decade ago, PRS worked together with LR Baggs to design a piezo system for their original hollowbody guitars. Their new piezo design has been perfected, retaining the same circuitry as the first incarnation to provide authentic acoustic-style tones. This means that the P22 is incredibly versatile, and could be the only guitar you’ll need for your next extensive set.
2 output jacks have been fitted to the P22, so that you can send each output to different sources. The pure electric tone can be sent to your most beloved amplifier, and you can simultaneously send the piezo output to either a dedicated acoustic amp or DI’d straight into a mixer or interface, for PA monitoring or recording applications.
A blend control can also let you mix the electric tone with the acoustic sounds for a richer texture, which can be sent through a single output if you prefer a simpler one amp set up.
2 Frets Less, More Tones:
Taking away 2 frets may not seem like a big deal, however for a dual humbucker guitar it completely affects the tone of the instrument – in a good way!
As the rosewood fretboard is slightly shorter, to maintain the same scale length and tension you need to move the bridge further back. This therefore widens the gap between the neck and bridge pickups, and while the bridge pickup will still sound the same and have plenty of bite, the neck pickup will produce a warmer tone as it is close to the centre of the guitar’s scale length.
The P22 therefore offers you a greater variety of sounds over PRS’ 24 fret models, and you can play blues and jazz styles with a more convincing tone thanks to the neck pickup’s darker sound. Along with the piezo system, the P22 offers an incredible range of tones.
Made In Maryland:
Like all USA PRS guitars, this has been made in their Maryland factory. During the building process, they mix the wisdom and skills of their traditional luthiers with the consistency of machines, to make a guitar to the highest quality every time while still keeping that personal hand-made touch.
With a mahogany body and neck, topped with a beautiful figured maple top, this guitar has a balanced sound with a focused midrange that cuts through the mix.
The Neck on this guitar has been cut to the “Pattern Regular” profile. Designed to be thin enough for shredders to enjoy while still being rounded enough for rhythm players to get around, this neck profile is one of the most popular for more modern players and old-school purists alike.
In recent years, PRS have started creating a wider range of pickups all based on vintage style PAFs, but with modern twists to make them more suitable for the modern guitarist. PRS's 58/15 pickups are a great choice for guitarists who want all of that classic PAF tone but with a bit of extra heat to help it cut through more in lead sections, or to handle more gain for heavier styles.
Second To None Hardware:
Not many companies can say that they have spent so long getting their hardware just perfect. PRS are one of the few that can. The Phase III Locking tuners keep the guitar in tune no matter how extreme you play. Even if you go full on Hendrix, this guitar will still stand its ground.
Here's what PRS say about the P22:
The P22 is the company’s original piezo-equipped solidbody guitar, providing musicians the versatility of wielding both acoustic and electric guitar tones in one instrument. PRS and LR Baggs partnered more than a decade ago to design the piezo system found in PRS’s original hollowbody models. The new system retains the same circuit design as the original, maintaining tonal authenticity and real world practicality. There are two output jacks on the P22, allowing guitarists to plug into their favorite electric guitar or acoustic guitar amp or DI into a soundboard. By utilizing the separate blend control, the tone of the P22’s 58/15 pickups can also be combined with acoustic sounds through a single output.
The P22 comes standard with a figured maple top, mahogany back, mahogany neck with a 22 fret rosewood fingerboard, and a redesigned PRS/LR Baggs piezo system. Uncovered 58/15 pickups round out this guitar’s specifications and help define the P22’s voice.
