Product Description

The G&L USA Fullerton Deluxe Comanche is a modern refinement of Leo Fender’s final iteration on the S-type guitar, the Comanche. Just by looking at the Comanche you can probably tell that this is a bit of a departure from the classic formula. But don’t worry, whilst this guitar may look and sound different to what you’re used to, there is plenty of familiarity here as well.

Body and Neck

Much like the S-type guitars from the early 50s, the Fullerton Deluxe Comanche has an Ash body. Since Ash is known for its light weight this guitar will be easy on your back and it has been said that Ash offers a bright, yet well-balanced tone to guitars.

The neck on this guitar is incredibly playable with its “Modern Classic” profile and 9 and ½” radius. The Modern Classic neck profile is slightly slim so it won’t feel like you’re holding a baseball bat, has a slight taper and generously rolled edges for an almost played-in feel. The 9 and ½” radius maple fingerboard is smooth to play and is a happy medium between the more curved vintage fingerboards and flatter modern ones. This makes chords easy to fret without compromising your ability to play leads and bends.

Electronics and Hardware

You might be looking at this guitar and wondering what on earth those pickups are? Well, these are Leo Fender-designed Magnetic Field Design Z-Coils. Because of the Z-shape of these pickups, they emphasise the bass of your lower strings and the treble of your higher strings which results in a punchier, yet well-balanced, modern sound. These pickups have all the articulation and brightness you’d expect in a single-coil but with the added benefit of being hum-cancelling!

The PTB system adds greater functionality and flexibility to the tone controls allowing you to shape the bass and treble with more precision. The mini-toggle expands the switching capabilities of the Fullerton Deluxe Comanche further than traditional S-types, giving you the option to select just the bridge and neck pickups for a T-type style sound or selecting all three pickups together.

Another innovation on this guitar is the Dual-Fulcrum vibrato bridge (also designed by Leo!) that allows you to easily bend up or down and provides greater tuning stability than its vintage counterparts.

Here's what G&L Say About the USA Fullerton Deluxe Comanche

The 2018 Fullerton Deluxe Comanche bundles some of the most time-honored option combinations from the G&L Individual Order menu. All FD Comanche guitars feature swamp ash bodies coated in transparent finishes to showcase their beauty, with ideal pickguard pairings to set off the colors just right. That elegance continues up the neck with the G&L polished Vintage Gloss finish that looks fantastic and feels silky, not sticky.

The G&L Comanche® is Leo’s final word on the traditional double-cutaway bolt-on axe. Fact is, the first thing you’ll notice about the Comanche is the distinctive shape of the Magnetic Field Design™ Z-Coil™ pickups designed by Leo Fender himself. These pickups deliver a bright and sparkly top end while offering a robust bottom end, all without any 60-cycle hum.

You’ll find plenty of power in the Z-coil pickups, but what’s surprising is how glassy and detailed they become as you roll back the volume and bass controls, the latter a part of the Comanche’s PTB™ (Passive Treble and Bass) system. What’s more, the Comanche includes a mini-toggle expander switch to allow neck+bridge or all three pickups together. In a pinch, the neck+bridge combo does a convincing faux ASAT® Special. Talk about versatile!

Making the most of this delicious combo is Leo’s Dual-Fulcrum vibrato, a work of engineering art which allows bending up or down with unsurpassed stability, while offering a silky feel through its beefy aluminum vibrato arm.

The Comanche was the very last double-cutaway bolt-on guitar designed by Leo Fender, the culmination of everything he had learned during his amazing lifetime. Founded by Leo Fender in 1980, the Comanche and all G&L USA instruments continue to be made in the historic G&L facility on Fender Avenue in Fullerton, California, the Birthplace of Bolt-on™.
