Product Description

The Epiphone Les Paul Melody Maker E1 is a highly-affordable single coil guitar for beginner guitarists, young or old alike. You'll get a fantastic, chimey tone sound.

Lightweight Body

The Les Paul Melody Maker E1 was designed with beginner in mind. The lightweight Poplar body means it's comfortable to play sitting or standing up. And the slim taper neck makes it a breeze for smaller hands to hold and play.

3- Way Pickup Selector

As with most Les Pauls, the E1 has a 3-way pickup selector that lets use you choose which pickup is active. So you can get gritty bridge pickup sounds or lovely, warm neck pickup sounds. Or the best of both worlds by having both pickups on at once. This gives you a full-bodied tone with plenty of clarity.

Here's what Epiphone say about the Les Paul Melody Maker E1:

Epiphone presents the 2017 Les Paul Melody Maker E1™, the most affordable 2-pickup Les Paul ever made with a slim lightweight Poplar body with powerful Epiphone Ceramic pickups.

Available in six exclusive colors—Ebony, Heritage Cherry Sunburst, Pacific Blue, Sunset Yellow, Turquoise, and Vintage Sunburst.

I really love tis guitar. Despite the low price I think it is a brilliant design. Simple and all the controls are right where I like them particularly the three way switch which, unlike on other guitars where it's placed at the top, is at the bottom to the back of the pickguard where you can't accidentally switch it to another setting. The finish on the bridge hardware is a little on the soft side. I don't know what alloy it is but I don't think it would do any harm to toughen the bridge up a bit. To me it sounds great through both solid state Orange Crush Pro 60 and my Marshall 2x12, 50 watt combi. The body adds resonance to the sound and I like the result. It's not too heavy either. The neck is comfortable and slim enough to curl my thumb round over the bass E string without too much fuss. Tuners work just fine. My one gripe was the neck joint. It could have been a far better fit. I actually put plastic shims in the gaps which has helped with sustain and I think improved the sound. I'm not convinced that even on a cheap guitar you can't get better tolerances than on this guitar. Perhaps it's a one off and most are ok I don't know. It could be that, given the price. It doesn't matter though; I fixed it and it plays really well. The neck is slightly more flexible than on other guitars, but again, it's not terminal and I have never found a guitar that you can't get some whammy bar effect on by 'leaning' on the neck a little bit. (Not too much obviously!) I think this design is so good that a slightly better quality version would just be a reall winner for Epiphone because as I said this a brilliant design. It looks fantastic and sounds great too! Simple is good.

Needed a bit of setup work done but once that was finished it plays nice for a beginners instrument given the price. Frets were rather sharp on one side.

Mr Jordan Niblock10th Jun 2019

A lot of people online say its no frills, but for a first guitar it sounds great. Had to lower the action to make it easier to play (small 9 year old daughter insisted on a full size because it was a turquoise LP) but I'd definitely recommend it for a first timer, especially as it's so light.

Dr Alan Holt28th Jan 2019

The action was quite high on the guitar but as I wanted this for playing slide it wasn't an issue for me. I had a Squier Bullet Mustang for Christmas and the action on that was nice and low (maybe a little too low). There a slight scuff on the fret board between the 1st/2ndd fret and were minor finishing issues on the side of the fret board where the neck joined the body. But this is nit picking - it was only £89 after all! For what I want this guitar for (slide), it's ideal but I don't think I'd recommend this guitar for a beginner - the extra £20 for the Mustang would be well worth it IMHO.
