Product Description

The Micro Dark is the latest in small and portable amps to come out of Orange. They originally launched their Micro Terror a few years ago which proved that a small hybrid amplifier can deliver some great rehearsal and gigging tones. Even with its small size it still managed to beat out a lot of other amps in its class.

Made To Rock

While the Micro Terror gave you the iconic Orange Terror sound in a smaller package the Micro Dark is more modern sounding with a lot more gain on tap. Still the single channel design with Volume, Shape and Gain controls gives you everything from crystal cleans to crushing high gain tones by manipulating your guitars volume control.

More Than Loud Enough.

While it may not sound like a lot 20w of solid state power is actually more than enough for most situations. With 20w of power you can easily use this amp at home, at a rehearsal or even at small to medium sized gigs if your cab is big enough.

Connections

For a small amp you really can do a lot. Not only do you have your usual guitar in and cab out but you also have a simulated headphone output for silent practice plus buffered effects loop for all of your favourite effects.

Great little amp. Sounds great. Not great customisation options, but solid for practicing.

A brilliant wee amp, which packs a hell of a lot more than the 20w on the spec. You can really crank it. I was sceptical before I bought it, seeing it’s more marketed to the ‘metal’ players among us. I play some metal, but hard, bluesy overdriven tones is what I like to play more than metal. It can really go for the scooper mids metal tone as well as a lower end bluesy tone. So it caters for all. A great little amp!!! It’s also cheap and looks cool!

I'd give the Micro Dark 5/5 for sound, but it falls down on a couple of other points. Firstly, there's no user manual included (at least with my example) - and not even a link to download some from the Orange website. This is important, because you MUST have headphones (or similar) plugged in if you're not connecting a cabinet. You'll damage the amp if you don't. Secondly, the headphones output really needs a level control, because it gets VERY loud very quickly as soon as you start to play with the amp's gain (use some headphones with a built-in volume control). I'd happily pay a few £s more if Orange added a headphones level control. But the sound is what really matters, and this is excellent. Although some reviews have portrayed the Micro Dark as a "metal" amp, it's actually its clean and edge-of-breakup tones that really impress me. I'm using it direct into my DAW and it offers an excellent, low-cost, valve alternative to my existing digital signal path, and I'm delighted by how good it sounds. Durability seems good. Despite its toy-like size, it's got a solid metal chassis and case, so it should withstand knocks fine.
