New strings and a full set up mean that you don't need to spend hours getting this guitar into working shape, gig and studio worthy from day 1.
Aren't Guitars set up at the factory? Can't I just tuned down for Drop C?
You might have got away playing in Drop C without a full set up before - and let's face it your guitar isn't going to break or anything. But all those subtle set up optimisations like action, intonation and string tension are set at the factory for standard tuning - Drop C is significant shift to those optimisations. That's why it's so important that an experienced guitar technician (like our Justin, Andy and Gavin!) changes the strings for an optimal tension, files the nut to the right width for the thicker strings and for the right action as well as making adjustments to the truss rod to precisely counter the great tension of strings with a greater mass, setting the saddles to reset the intonation to eliminate microtuning issues... and more! The end result is a guitar that feels and sounds like it was designed to be in Drop C from the start!
What a set up does
Have you ever picked up a friends guitar and just instantly felt at home, like you could play anything you wanted with nothing in your way. That is a well set up guitar. A poorly set up guitar will go out of tune quicker, will not be intonated properly and could have problems like high action or notes fretting out (cutting out short).
Getting your guitar set up is much like getting a service for your car - it checks it over and makes sure it is in full working order so that you can get the best possible experience with that guitar for as long as humanly possible.
