We love Monty's gear here at Andertons Music Co! While guitar pickups are their forte, the London-based brand also produces a range of guitar repair and customisation accessories - including the "Montypresso" relic wax!
Gloriously Age Your Guitar
If you're looking to turn your ’03 into a ’63, or your R9 into a ’59 - Montypresso is the perfect solution. Applying it to open-grained woods darkens and relics the lightest shades while giving a smooth, gloriously grubby finish. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t like that! In fact, Monty's uses this wax on all of the customer relic jobs that they do - so you know it's good.
Filthy-Up The Fingerboard!
You can rub Monty's Montypresso Relic Wax into a non-glossy, unfinished Maple board and it'll simulate all the grime and smoke that you'd see on old vintage guitars. It nourishes the fretboard too, and can even be applied on the back of an open-grain neck to emulate that played-in look.
This wax is also great for non-Maple boards, and can noticeably darken say a Laurel or Pau Ferro fingerboard that's not as nice-looking as Rosewood. Three or four applications will do the trick. Our very own Lee Anderton is a plaudit of this method, saying "I’ve used it on a couple of guitars in the video studio & it works!"
How To Apply
Simply rub a generous amount onto your fingerboard or the area that you wish to darken, and leave for five-to-ten minutes (the longer you leave it, the better the result) then take a clean cloth and buff it off. For the best results, Monty's recommends multiple applications, spread over time, and allow the stain to soak deep into the wood and work its magic.
Please do not forget that Montypresso is a stain and once applied, it will make a permanent change to your instrument. Please be totally sure you want to rub on some age before commencing, as you will not be able to find a cosmetic surgeon talented enough to turn back these waxy hands of time! While it works wonders on guitars, it's not so great with clothing or soft furnishings. And gloves are also recommended when applying!
At its base, Monty's Montypresso Relic Wax is made from the same all-natural ingredients as their Instrument Food and is non-toxic. So while artificially relic'ing your guitar, it also helps to condition and feed the wood!
