Product Description

G&L is the final legacy of legendary guitar builder Leo Fender. Creator of so many iconic instruments, Leo continued to re-work these designs when he founded G&L in 1979.

The Doheny is relatively faithful to the original bolt-on neck, offset design but with the added benefit of higher output pickups and a more stable vibrato bridge system.

Body and Neck

The Basswood body on this guitar keeps it nice and light making it comfortable to play, especially for long periods and while standing; additionally, some say Basswood lends a balanced yet warm tone to guitars.

The Doheny features a 9” radius Brazilian Cherry fingerboard – this is slightly more curved than most modern fingerboard and makes fretting chords a breeze without compromising your ability to play leads and bends.

Electronics and Hardware

The Doheny features Leo Fender-designed wide bobbin Magnetic Field Design single coil pickups. These pickups are the classic offset jazz style single coils that have a warm, well-defined sound popular with surf and indie rockers alike. The Magnetic Field Design also makes these pickups quieter, with a higher output than traditional Alnico single coils.

The Leo Fender-designed Passive Treble Bass system adds greater functionality and flexibility to the tone controls allowing you to shape the bass and treble with more precision.

One of the significant innovations on this guitar is the Leo Fender-designed Dual-Fulcrum vibrato bridge which allows you to bend up or down with ease and greater tuning stability than its vintage counterparts.

Here's What G&L Say About the Tribute Doheny

Introducing G&L Doheny: the Evolution of the Offset

Inspired by the classic surf sound born in Southern California, the new G&L Doheny™ takes its name from the iconic beach in the heart of Orange County where '60s surf pioneers became legends. Since those halcyon days, both music and surfing have evolved far beyond their roots, and so has the performance of the gear.

Doheny takes the bolt-on offset-body into new sonic territory with newly developed Magnetic Field Design™ jazz pickups, the first on any production G&L. Naturally, these new pickups will invite comparison to Leo’s jumbo MFD™ ASAT® Special pickups, given they employ a narrow bobbin aperture and broad coil splay. But Doheny's MFD pickups are more about jangle than twang, just as they should be for a guitar like this. With a classic jazz bobbin aperture wrapped with traditional Formvar wire, these pickups just might be the approach Leo would have taken had he been with us a few years longer.

So what’s it like? The sound is rich in harmonics yet surprisingly full, the result of carefully researching and applying Leo’s creative work across the decades. The Doheny pickups deliver the experience fans have hoped for, with their flexibility maximized by the PTB tone system that allows echoes of yesteryear while delivering more output and range for today’s music. Add in Leo’s finest vibrato for enhanced tuning stability and improved sustain, and the results are astounding.

Its my first electric guitar and I love it but I cant compare it properly because of that. But there are some things I would like to mention. I know it depends on the piece but my tremolo is quite unstable. I believe its because of the nut. I love the warm sound of the pickups, but the neck pickup is so heavy in the bottom that I need sometimes to roll off the bass knob all the way down. I tried to change height of the pickup, but there wasnt big difference. You can definitely see on the body that the guitar is from Tribute serie, there are some imperfections in the finish and pickguard doesnt sit properly around the pickups. But overall its cool guitar with nice shape and great playability, neck is very comfortable and well made only the glossy finish is something what somebody could hate.

Weights hefty, sounds amazing and with a little oil, fret cleaning and some new strings it sounds incredible. Pick ups are super loud and I didn’t even need to set it up. Came in tune and has better tuning stability than my baritone premium guitars. I’d absolutely recommend this to someone looking for an offset guitar that doesn’t sacrifice sound and stability at the expense of cost.

The guitar it's self is great, the finish and quality control is poor, the paint was chipped on the neck cut out and you can see the preparation marks through the finish. But it plays awesome and sounds awesome so it's a shame the finish isn't great.
