Gibson Custom Shop 1968 Les Paul Custom Reissue in Ebony

2015 Spec

The Gibson Les Paul Custom is an incredible instrument that has inspired generations of musicians. While it has gone through many versions each slightly changing the formula, one of the most loved periods of these guitars is the late 60's. This is because it is the most modern original Les Paul Custom that still uses the more traditional body style with no weight relief and solid construction.

Classic Gibson Construction

Over the long life of the Gibson Les Paul Custom it has gone through so many different builds. It started off very similar to this guitar with a one piece mahogany body topped with maple and a mahogany neck. During the 70's this changed to feature an mixture of mahogany and maple in what has been called 'pancake' design where the maple sits between two pieces of mahogany.

But with this guitar using the much more simple single block of mahogany topped with maple you get a big warm sound with fast response that allows it work great for bluesy rock, jazz, pop and more. This incredible body is then matched up with a mahogany neck finished with an ebony fingerboard that means you can let your hands to the talking as the playing surface is so smooth and non obtrusive.

Sweet '68 Pickups

By the end of the 60's the PAF style pickups were becoming less and less common as more artists wanted to use more effects and saturation. By moving over to some hotter and slightly brighter pickups in these '68 customs Gibson made something that suited the music scene at the time which was much more demanding of its equipment and its synergy with the rest of their gear.

Period Accurate Hardware

Gibson are always looking for new ways to innovate their reissue guitars. This year the changes may sound small but they all add up to make a big difference to the sound and feel of the guitar. Starting off the old tailpiece has been replaced by a lightweight aluminium piece which gets much closer to the original spec of the guitar. The other changes include a new long neck tenon fit, hand sanded finish and hide glue top that all get you just that step closer to an original.

Here's what Gibson say about the 1968 Les Paul Custom

The Custom was one of the first genuine single-cut Les Pauls to roar back into the lineup in the late '60s, and has been a popular and collectible evolution of the model ever since. The 1968 Les Paul Custom Reissue marries accurate specs and features such as a long neck tenon, full-size Alnico II humbuckers, and an authentic '68 neck profile with the elegant Custom appointments like pearl block markers on an ebony fingerboard, gold hardware, and period-correct multi-ply binding. Dressed in a hand wet-sanded nitro Ebony finish, it's the closest thing to bagging the original return of the "Black Beauty."
