USA Pickups & Limited Edition Colour

This particular Strat is extra special. It's equipped with a trio of USA-made American Vintage '59 pickups for a rocking authentic vintage tone. You'll also stand out from the crowd thanks to a classy rare Faded Candy Apple Red finish.

Construction

We all want our Fender to age like a real vintage instrument. In the case of the Road Worn Strat, it will! It's coated in a nitrocellulose lacquer, allowing the paint to wear in beautifully over years of playing.

The Road Worn harks back to early Fender design, boasting a curved 7.25-inch radius fretboard and mid-'60s "C" shape neck, perfect for big bends and a thumb-over-fingerboard technique. The pau ferro fretboard and maple neck combination feels great with vintage tall frets under your fingers.

Sound

This is where the Limited Edition Road Worn comes into its own. The '60s Strat is packing a trio of hot American Vintage '59 single coil pickups, which you'll also find on Fender Custom Shop guitars. Yep, they sound that good. The '59s produce a spicy top end, rich in harmonics and with a lively bass. The alnico V magnets have a great effect on the focus, creating a slicing attack in the bridge position and a classic lead tone in the neck.

Originally I was looking for a Fiesta Red American 60s guitar but stock was short. Then I spotted this. Now I have always avoided the "roadworn" look preferring pristine. The USA Fender 60s pickups swung the deal and already having a Mexican Strat from the naughties I expected the guitar to play well and have good fit and finish! I purchased a Fender standard case too. Out of the box - playability....very good. Clearly there had been a good set up here! I prefer a slightly higher action very close to this guitar out of the box. Being a mature Strat player I made some minor tweaks....the guitar was in tune out of thd box and intonation spot on! Even the springs in the trem were set correctly and tensioned pretty close. I lowered the action a tad and increased the trem spring tension slightly. It is a myth that the original tremolos don't hold their tuning! Set em up properly and they are very stable! Even the two outer screws on the trem unit were correctly adjusted! It plays like a dream! I love thd 7.25 radius, very flat great for chord work and energetic leads! Now the sound.....beautiful! These pickups are gorgeous with rich warm tone and very evenly balanced output! Even the bridge pickup has warmth and clarity and is certainly quite full. Not thin at all! Hank Marvin to Hendrix! Great tone! Finish.......well for me this was a shock -opening a guitar box to see a tarnished worn and cracked paint job is quite bizarre! How could I tell if it was intentional or not? However the neck fit, fretboard and scratchplate were all perfect. Tuners immaculate. The strangest thing was the neck felt played in! It had been sanded and even had a slightly darker tone! This guitar is perfect for my blues rock orientated playing it is an absolute gem! Best buy yet! So impressed!

The guitar is superb. Compared to the photo on the Andertons site, the pickguard is vintage looking, and leans towards mint green tones, which combined with the aged, candy apple red, makes the guitar look fantastic. The repainting is moderate, which in my opinion is preferable a little less flashy, and it is both discreet and subtle, and homogeneous throughout the guitar, from the head of the guitar, the neck with the worn varnish , and even the metal parts are discreetly oxidized. Honestly, it may not be an American custom shop, but this strat road worn, with its relining which makes it immediately comfortable to play and the nitrocellulose varnish, after that, it will be difficult to return to a modern guitar to the touch with lacquer glossy polyurethane. In my opinion, the nitrocellulose varnish is the big advantage of this road worn, even before the repainting, which is the second big advantage of the guitar for the incredible playing comfort it provides, the aesthetic aspect being a matter of taste, specific to each (well, I repeat, it is magnificent!). And in terms of sound, the custom shop pickups, for this Andertons exclusive guitar, are both defined and crystalline in Fenderian clean sound, and deliciously biting and warm, on sounds with overdrive. I clearly hear the greater richness of tone compared to an honest Player Series pickups. Honestly, I'm definitely in love with this guitar. It's a superb superb guitar, now remains to play it and give it credit, but when you have a beautiful, well-designed and magnificent instrument, it can only make you want to play it!

Great on the phone,as always, but what was supposed to be a new guitar obviously wasn't. Plastic removed from scratchplate. High E nut slot cut way too deep. Disappointing set-up all round. There was an Andertons Qualiy Control sticker on the carton but apart from the staples being left in and sticking out dangerously this guitar hasn't been anywhere near anyone who knows how to do QC. Luckily I have the skills to address all the things wrong and the guitar is getting close to being decent. I didn't return it for exchange because it's my own fault for buying sight unseen and am content to take it as a lesson, and a warning for the future.

When I pulled it out of its box, I played it for about 20 minutes unplugged (as I often do), and I could feel I was comfortable with it. I then plugged it to my Pro Junior and after I started playing it, I was… shocked. I could really “feel it”. Apart from the fact that it was almost in tune and perfectly setup in terms of action, everything I tried to play seemed so easy. The guitar makes it easier to play. The neck is a joy to play, satin, very fast. It is not chunky, but it feels consistent, it’s not thin at all and 7.25 radius and vintage tall frets is the perfect combination for me. The 2 aspects that differentiate this specific guitar are the Nitro Finish (and specifically this color that I find amazing) and the American Vintage 59 pickups. The relic-ing is not overdone and though based on a template, it looks good. And the feel you have from Nitro is priceless... Pickups are great. I’m not a Strat expert, but they sound just like I wanted them to sound. Positions 2 and 4 are instant classic and they have a little drop in volume vs. pos 5 (Neck) that sounds great as well, very full. I think even position 1 sounds good, it’s thin, but consistent. I can say Vintage 59 pickups are a fantastic set. The only think I was not 100% satisfied out of the box are the frets. The fret ends are ok, but they need some crowning and polishing. They’re not high, they’re perfect in height. They are just a little rough. By playing on it some hours the problem almost fixed itself, but it was there at the beginning. In the end, I’m extremely satisfied with this guitar, and against all my expectations it looks like a Strat “could be” my guitar. Let’s see what happens in the next months!

Bought a Hansen Thinline style guitar from the shop which spoiled me for my other guitars. I wanted a Strat that had a similar feel, nitro finish, custom pickups, sensibly reliced to feel comfortable in the hand and at an affordable price. This guitar fits the bill perfectly as a companion to the Hansen. Highly recommended.

Absolute steal! I have been searching for a great sounding strat without the huge price tag for years and I’ve never quite found THAT sound, until this guitar. Wow, those pickups are killer! Such a versatile sounding strat,’it literally is all genres in one guitar! Fantastic play and feel. It wasn’t set up great out of the box and kept going out of tune even without the wammy. So my guitar tech replaced the bridge string with a more sturdy spring which sorted out the tuning. After a good set up this guitar sings! Grab an absolute steal!

Really nice guitar which, once adjusted to my preferences, plays and sounds incredible - these are excellent instruments for the price. I had considered using the Fender Mod Shop to spec a similar guitar but glad I didn't as this one is much closer to what I wanted and saved me nearly 1000GBP. In many ways this one is better since it is nitro finish and roadworn.

Great looking guitar, but had some rough frets which needed sanding and finishing. The setup was not great, but that was due to transport annd storage. Also relic’ ed it further to increase the checking. Looks killer! The sound is a bit thinner than my other Strat with fat 50’s custom shop pickups, but still full of the vintage character and chime.
