The Precision Bass is the definitive electric bass guitar with a sound that has helped define music since the 50s. It’s hard to beat the sound of a vintage P-Bass but getting your hands on one is both difficult and highly expensive. This custom shop model recreates the 1961 P-Bass giving you a vintage look, tone, and feel, at far less than the cost of an original.
‘61-Style Precision Bass
This model is based on the 1961 Precision Bass. In the 60s, after a decade in production, the Precision Bass had been refined to become the model as we know it today, with a few appointments that separate it from modern versions. The rosewood fingerboard is a classic marker of a 60s-era Fender and the fingerboard radius is era-correct at 7.25” offering a smooth and slightly curved playing surface. The shape of the neck itself is a 60s P-Bass Oval “C” which really fills your hand as you’d expect a Precision Bass neck, particularly a vintage one, to do.
After the mid-50s Fender switched to alder as their primary body wood and that’s what’s been used here. It’s finished in 3-tone sunburst (introduced in 1958) and has been given the heavy relic treatment. Other vintage-style appointments include the metal bridge and pickup covers and the finger rest on the treble side of the bass.
The Fender Custom Shop has aged this bass to give it the look of an original ‘61 model as well as an instantly played-in feel from the moment you pick it up. The body is finished in nitrocellulose lacquer which will further age and wear naturally as you play making it uniquely yours.
Of course, no vintage recreation would be complete without the sound to match. This bass comes loaded with Fender’s 59-62 P-Bass split-coil pickup which gives you that iconic warm, rounded sound that’s been heard on countless records. Using the tone control you can go from a full and open sound through to a woodier tone. The P-Bass format may be simple, but it’s capable of almost any style you throw at it.
