Product Description

Classic design, contemporary features. The Les Paul Modern brings legendary design into the 21st century. Epiphone’s Inspired by Gibson range takes advanced construction techniques and elite electronics and applies them to accessible instruments.

Construction

Everyone knows the original Les Paul is a hefty beast. Epiphone are applying Ultra Modern chambering to the mahogany body in order to relieve your shoulders of some of the burden - without affecting tone. Topped with a maple cap to lay down the cool sparkle paint job, the Les Paul Modern is a different animal to what we’ve seen in the past from Epiphone.

The asymmetrical neck shape and ebony fingerboard are more welcome additions in enhancing playability and fretting hand comfort. In the hardware department, the Modern is equipped with a Graptech NuBone nut and LockTone ABR bridge to enforce super tight tuning stability.

Sound

The Les Paul Modern houses ProBucker-2 and 3 humbuckers modelled after their Gibson-made counterparts. They’re inspired by the original PAF pickups and are characterised by the alnico vintage output and sweet sustain.

The bridge ProBucker-3 is slightly overwound for extra attack and sounds great through high gain, while the neck pickup takes a softer touch. Both are coil split to create dynamic single coil tones in an instant.

I'm really happy with this purchase. I wanted a Les Paul, but did not want the heavy weight of most models. So the modern, with weight relief was ideal. I was not fussed about the out of phase option, but it's a interesting "extra" to play with. Flame top is great and the magma orange fade is great. Build quality looks very good.

Wow, just wow. I cannot believe how good this is at the price point. I'd seen several blindfold tests of this against the full blown Gibson version where players couldn't tell the difference, which is why I took the plunge. I've always thought Les Pauls are the best looking guitar by far but being brought up on Strats I've always found the heel block off putting. This "Modern" version though is a great improvement no more lump of wood in the way. It plays great, was well setup out of the box. Straight into a JCM600 head and cab it has that classic Les Paul sound in spades. It's also extremely versatile with the coil split and phase switching. It's not quite a strat but it gets pretty close and there's a whole host of very usable sounds to be had. I bought it for the Les Paul sound as I have plenty of other options for single coil and extreme heavy sounds but if I had to I could use this as my only guitar. The body is three pieces of mahogany but at first glance it looks like one. The joins are really hard to see, I actually thought it was one piece at first glance but realised that was never going to be the case. I did have to look that hard to see the joins though. The most striking thing about this particular guitar though is the flamed top. It is absolutely stunning. It's almost a perfect book match as well. Obviously they vary from guitar to guitar but this is supberb. I just cannot believe a guitar circa £600 has this standard of finish on it. It's so good looking I just can't bring myself to put the pick guard on and cover it, even partially. Not to mention I'd have to drill into that beautiful flame. Stunning.... The only negative I could possibly find is that despite having locking machine heads, it's been strung at the factory as a normal guitar with wraps around the posts, but that's nit picking and easily fixed. If you're thinking about buying one, get it, you won't regret it.
