PRS Ltd Edition Custom 24 Trampas Green w/ Katalox Fingerboard

At the winter NAMM show in 1985, Paul Reed Smith introduced the world to PRS and its first model, the Custom 24. Since then the Custom 24 has been a mainstay of the PRS line-up and remains one of their most popular models.

This 2018 limited edition model is everything you could ever want from a Custom 24 and so much more. With high-quality materials and construction, stunning looks, and incredible tone this PRS won’t disappoint.

Body & Neck

The Custom 24 has a mahogany back and a glued-in mahogany neck. This classic combination famously provides guitars with a warm tonality and increased sustain. The addition of a maple top, which some say adds a brightness and snap to the tone, gives this guitar a striking appearance, especially in this classy Trampas Green finish.

The neck profile on this Custom 24 is “Pattern Thin” which means, as the name suggests, the neck is thinner than the regular profile which suits lead players and those with fast fingers who take any opportunity to rip out a solo.

Breaking from tradition, this PRS uses a katalox fingerboard. Now you’d be forgiven for not knowing what katalox is, but it’s essentially a wood that’s similar to ebony as it is very dense and dark in colour, although katalox sometimes has a purple hue to it. Not only does it look and feel great, it also has no CITES restrictions on it so you can rest assured when travelling.

Electronics & Hardware

The pickups are truly the engine of a guitar and the dual 85/15 humbuckers inside this Custom 24 do not disappoint. The 85/15s are appropriately named as they take the design of PRS’ original humbuckers from 1985 and update them with the 30 years of experience PRS have accumulated since. These pickups have a clear and emphasised high-midrange and low end with a thick tone that makes these humbuckers impressively versatile.

Straightforward controls make this guitar a breeze to play: one volume knob, one tone knob, and a 5-way selector switch. That’s it. But don’t mistake simplicity for limitation; there are plenty of tones at your fingertips, especially thanks to the switching options. The 5-way switch gives you your full humbucker tones in positions 1, 3, and 5; however, positions 2 and 4 will pair a coil split with the chosen humbucker for some extra brightness and articulation.

The PRS-designed Gen III tremolo system has a resonant brass bridge which beautifully balances sustain, stability, and tone and gives you the option to throw subtle-to-mid-level pitch bending into your playing. The addition of Phase 3 locking tuners is the perfect complement to the Gen III trem as they give the Custom 24 that extra stability that you'll appreciate if you're a fan of soaring bends.
