Product Description

Sire Marcus Miller V5 basses sound better and play smoother than ever as part of the 2nd Gen range! This classic J-style bass packs a whole lot of desirable old-school character, but with a modern feel for today's player. As ever with Sire, the V5 is an extremely easy fit for almost every type of bassist thanks to its super comfortable neck and beautifully contoured body.

New Features

The two main focuses of version 2 have been on improving the bass tone and the feel of the neck. Marcus Miller worked alongside Sire to redesign the pickups with stronger magnets and coils. They deliver even more clarity and dish out a deeper quality tone than before. A matte neck finish replaces the sticky gloss coat for a much smoother feel. The neck radius has also been flattened to a much more contemporary 9.5 inches.

Version 2 Updated

This 'Version 2 Updated' model gets yet another needed redesign; the square block saddles have been switched out for rounded block saddles. This means enhanced playing comfort, especially when muting or using a pick!

Construction

Sire specialise in Roasted Maple necks. This advanced baking process rids the wood of moisture and imperfections; leaving it with a much darker, luxurious tint and increasing stability. The rolled-edge fingerboard also come as standard and give the V5 the touch of a high-end instrument.

Sound

J-style basses are ultra flexible in their usage and the V5 is no exception. Its Marcus Vintage-J Revolution set produces incredibly pronounced tones great for both fingerpicking and slapping. Legendary player Marcus Miller knows more than most about what makes a great bass tone, so you can trust his judgement here!

The bass sounds wonderful, especially in the third quarter of the neck from the bottom - that's really just magic! The fifth string can be slightly on the muddy side, but I think this is one of the most difficult things to get right in a cheap bass. Intonation is *very* slightly out on the second string, but this can be adjusted. Stock action is a trifle high, but this can also be sorted out. The bass looks marvellous, if rather traditional - but I suppose that's what I asked for. The neck and body are immaculate, and build quality seems very good. I do worry about the gigantic tuners; they are pretty heavy, although dive is not as bad a some say. It's more that they're so prominent that they are a clear physical weak spot, especially the one for the first string, all alone on the bottom of the headstock. The V5 compares very favourably with my previous fretless experience, a Squier Jazz Bass, though of course the Squier is rather cheaper. My internet research places it about the level of a Fender Player in terms of sound and looks, which is rather pricier! The comparison with my Peavey Fury IV fretted bass, which has active pickups, shows off the difference between a rock bass with a preamp and a jazz bass without. With the V5, you will never get that pristine *thung* of an active bass, but, likewise, you will never get the V5's brassy tone (which is just sublime around the 7th-14th "frets"). All in all, very nice, and I suspect, even post-price rises, a bargain, given the competition.
