Podcasting, Live Sound & Recording?

The DM1 is a brilliant solution for increasing the signal produced from a passive microphone. If you’re doing live sound, recording in a studio, or podcasting, you will definitely benefit from using this simple, but effective bit of gear. It not only boosts the signal, but also works to reduce interference (while improving the level to your preamp). It achieves this without creating unnecessary noise. Output impedance is also incredibly low here. This helps to massively reduce the chance of buzz or RF interference.

Had an issue with crackling on my rode Procaster. Gain had to be turned up to max to be heard causing crackling. The DM1 completely fixed it.

Bought to try out with a vintage ribbon mic, i.e. low output compared to a large diaphragm condenser. It certainly provides the gain and wide frequency response promised. But is it's output really 'low noise'? I suppose it depends on what you're comparing it to... Have decided that the mic preamps of my Sound Devices SD302 have a far lower noise-floor than the sE DM1. Basically I'm better off plugging the ribbon straight into the SD302 and not using the DM1! (even on a 45m length of mic cable) The ribbon mic being used was a Shure model 300, recently refurbished by Xaudia, so reasonably sensitive as far as ribbons go. My suggestion: don't bother with a mini preamp like this, unless you have a specific problem driving a long cable with a very insensitive mic and the risk of interference getting in. Far better to invest in a good mic input stage for your recording system in the first place!
