Product Description

Mark Holcomb has gone from relative obscurity to becoming one of the most respected guitarists in the world in just a few short years. After working on his own project Haunted Shores for years it wasn't until he joined metal superstars Periphery in 2011 that his playing and tone were recognised as some of the best around.

Before he had a USA Core PRS signature model but that was well out of the price range of most guitarists. Now this SE model is coming out providing incredible sounds with top notch hardware at a price that most guitarists will be able to afford.

Seymour Duncan Alpha & Omega Pickups

This is clearly the centrepiece of this guitar. These pickups were custom made for Holcomb's own limited run of USA PRS guitars and are now available on this SE model. The bridge pickup is designed to be bright with powerful mids and low end that help provide a percussive tone that works amazingly well with high speed, high gain playing that utilises a lot of staccato notes and muting.

The neck pickup was designed to have a bit lower output but still keep a lot of that glassy, percussive tone you normally only find in the bridge position. By doing this fretting hand phrasing and smaller nuances in your playing really come through nice and clear which is what you sometimes lose with a regular neck pickup.

Mark Holcomb Specs

This means a longer scale length and a change in some of the materials to suit a heavier styles and especially the percussive sound of djent. So the scale length is extended to 25.5" scale for tighter string tension, the fretboard radius is flattened to 20" and the usual Mahogany/Rosewood neck has been replaced with a slim Maple/Ebony neck for smoother action and less resistance.

Here's what PRS say about the SE Mark Holcomb

The band Periphery has become a force to be reckoned with in the progressive metal scene thanks to their complex rhythms and soaring melodies. Guitarist Mark Holcomb helps achieve this full, lethal sound with his PRS guitars and signature Seymour Duncan Alpha and Omega pickups. PRS and Holcomb have worked closely together to develop a truly unique guitar for the SE Series lineup.

"With my SE signature model, we managed to capture all of the defining characteristics of my Maryland-made guitar and turn it into a streamlined, less-costly package. It is an incredibly special instrument, and one that is the primary focus of my rig in the studio and onstage." - Mark Holcomb, Periphery

The SE Mark Holcomb model truly stands on its own in the PRS lineup and delivers addictive playability thanks to some unique specifications, including a 24-fret, 25.5" scale length wide thin satin maple neck with 20" radius ebony fretboard. Holcomb's signature pickups provide the right amount of output and articulation whether you're playing sophisticated chords or solos and whether you're playing alone or working in the mix of a band. Other specifications include a quilted maple veneer, black chrome hardware, and a 3-way blade pickup switch with push/pull tone knob for coil splitting.

Plays great thanks to the satin neck and flatter neck radius. The Alpha/Omega pickups sound absolutely phenomenal. Couple of disappointing QC issues with the finish and a teperamental pickup selector (probably due to some dodgy wiring) knock it down a star

It was playable out of the box. Tuned in the Holcomb standard drop C. The intonation was pretty near perfect too. My favourite parts of the whole instrument are the pickups; they sound clean as a whistle and separate out each note beautifully whether they’re picked or strummed. Not a single note gets lost in the haze like with cheaper pickups. They’re extremely versatile, whether you’re going for clean sounds or pure dirt bomb, high gain metal sounds. The coil split function is great too; It doesn’t sound synthetic like some “fake” coil splitter functions do. I absolutely love the wide flat fret board. The neck is thin and feels “fast”. I may tweak the action a tad further down the line but it’s certainly more than playable out the box. The satin finish on the neck is great too; my hand doesn’t stick to it on long slides like it does on some of my lacquered finish necks. Tuning keys are pretty standard, it would be nice to have some locking keys, but I guess much of the price is in the pickups alone (I’ve seen them around 250-300 just on their own). I like bridge because it feels flat and the wrist sits real nice for the faster picking and palm mutes. Chunky frets are just a personal preference of mine. The ONLY thing I would change straight out the box if I could would be the nut. The attention to detail on everything else is worth the price, but the nut is a pretty basic cheap plastic, which is a shame given that a decent Graph Tech nut costs about a tenner. Saying that, it still holds its tune pretty well after a few heavy bends. I may change the nut further down the line.
