Product Description

Introduced a few years ago, the Vela has been a hit model with PRS fans. Adored for its elegant offset body shape, vintage-inspired hardware appointments and relative affordability; the Vela range has been expanded to offer greater variety. This particular PRS S2 Vela adheres to the popular formula, but features a smooth satin nitro finish and a semi-hollow body; providing added attitude, resonance and a truly addictive feel!

Body & Neck

PRS' S2 Vela Satin boasts a Mahogany body, delivering a warm sound with plenty of harmonic richness in the mid-range - especially with its semi-hollow construction. With ergonomic contours around the entirety of its doublecut shape, the Vela Semi-Hollow has a cozy and lightweight feel that allows you to play without hindrance.

Joining the body is a Mahogany neck carved to PRS' acclaimed "Pattern Regular" profile. Providing a natural and supportive feel, the neck is also topped with a silky smooth Rosewood fingerboard that offers a luxurious touch under the fingers.

Hardware & Electronics

Although this particular model may be a part of the more budget-friendly S2 line, PRS spared no expense when it came to the instrument's hardware and electronics. The PRS Plate Style bridge keeps things solid, with its beautifully-machined design offering a comfy feel and traditional brass saddles guaranteeing phenomenal sustain. At the other end of the guitar you’ll find a set of PRS S2 locking tuners that'll keep your tuning super-stable, while making string changes a lot easier too.

Its pickguard-loaded electronics feature a PRS-Designed DS-01 pickup in the bridge, providing a bright punky tone, and the PRS-Designed Type-D Single Coil in the neck that gives the Vela Semi-Hollow some noteworthy bite. The coil-tap on the tone control allows the bridge pickup to split to single-coils, providing a balanced tone that will cut through the mix with style.

Very light, around 5lbs, lighter than my f holed Gibson LP, slightly quieter acousticly, but much louder than my solid Fender Strat. While the price was in the same ball park as these two other guitars, the finish and build quality is a considerable step up, and it arrived as though a good luthier had recently set it up. The other two guitars took several hours adjustment and tweaking when purchased (elsewhere), this guitar is set up so good I will leave well alone! The pickups are very well matched and balanced, the bridge pup splits well, the single coil setting very usable, and full humbucker not as harsh sounding as the "vintage" PAF on the LP. The neck D single coil pup sounds quite similar to the custom 69's I have put in the strat, which I really like, but I actually like the D better, as it cleans up very smoothly, is fuller, and more chimey. The switch, volume and tone are slightly cheap feeling, but they are very well positioned and have a very even taper. I put an Emerson Custom wiring harness inc. pots etc. in the Strat, they're not quite as even as those, but better than the LP. Also very useable tone and volume combinations. Cleans up really well with the volume, doesn't sound weedy at lower levels, tone control usable throughout its range across all pup combinations. Very comfortable and easy to play, the neck is the most consistent out of the three guitars I have referenced, and the satin finish is really very comfortable compared with standard nitro finish or even poly satin. The grain is quite pronounced all over the guitar, and adds something great. However, the frets are not rolled quite as well as on the Gibson, but better finished than the Strat. Could be a stylistic choice, but I think Gibson neck a little better, it's bound and pleked, but there still isn't much in it. PRS feels more precise, Gibson a bit more sumptuous. Super easy string change, all from the top, leave guitar on back for whole thing, locking tuner design best I've seen. Haven’t had to do this yet as PRS strings it came with are fine. I usually use NYXL strings but PRS are perfectly useable. I had to change the strings on all previous guitars when I bought them before any serious use. This guitar produces an amazing range of sounds. It can be as snappy as a telecaster, maybe even more so, brass saddles and brass in the nut I believe, (although looks like a type of Tusq PTFE nut) give it a distinctly tele twang. Use just humbucker in the bridge and it's quite like the LP. Middle pos very funky and stratty sounding. Roll off tone and neck pup gets jazzy, takes out the nasal twang. Overdrive sounds good with all pup combinations, from light crunch to full on screaming sustain. They've all got their own thing happening, I will be experimenting and finding new sounds for some time I am sure. Could be more versatile than the other two guitars put together? Thank you Andertons, and Paul Reed Smith. Folks, if you are looking for something a bit versatile and unusual, a tele / SG meld, I would recommend trying one of these out. Look out Fender / Gibson, I found a better bang for my buck!
