Here's what Pogo Pedals Say about the FZS-1 Modern Fuzz

The inspiration behind our Modern Fuzz was the wedge-shaped Tom Oberheim FZ1-S designed for Maestro in 1972.  It's a scantly used vintage pedal that builders today rarely use as a platform for their fuzz builds, but it’s one we really love playing.  We wanted to put our own original sonic stamp on it and modernize it to stand out from the legions of Muffs, Fuzz Faces and Tone Bender clones, that seemingly dominates the fuzz pedal market today. The end product is something very unique for Pogo Pedals, and we are very excited to get this in the hands of today’s players.

We began by using the same circuit platform, but instead used 6 high gain/high current NPN silicon transistors in a parallel CLEAN mix control and revoiced the EQ on both the clean and fuzz signal paths. The clean side has more clean gain, with fatter Lows and Low Mids with the fuzz side now having more gain and saturation, with less gated notes dying and falling off like the original.  The D / B voice switch is our improved design over the original FZ1-S slider switch that we re-EQ’d for proper guitar and bass frequencies for tone shaping with the players existing guitar effects on their pedalboards. Our Modern Fuzz was designed to blend both clean and fuzz signals together to ultimately let the players find their own unique sound and voice in fuzztone shaping.

Controls

  • Level – Clockwise rotation controls both clean and fuzz output levels
  • Fuzz - Clockwise rotation increases fuzz gain - saturation
  • Clean - Is a mix control, so beginning at noon on the control, counter clockwise rotation is more clean and less fuzz, clockwise rotation is more fuzz and less clean
  • Voice Switch D / B - D = Dark, B  = Bright: Is a tone switch for the fuzz signal path only.

There aren't many mini fuzz pedals with a clean blend. A really nice feature - a deal-breaker, actually. When the clean/fuzz blend hits modulation, you get a really cool outcome - and when the clean/fuzz blend hits more dirt, you get a crazy good lead tone (i've got mine going into a Pigtronix modulated delay and a Tone City Rat clone; and it sounds real nice). Having a bit of clean just gives that extra bit of articulation. Also has a bright/dark toggle. I actually like the smooth, warm sound of humbuckers into dark mode - but i also like to flick to bright (as intended) for some raspy highs now and then. On the downside, the knobs aren't very nice; these are thin and fiddly and plasticy - Pigtronix really are the kings of micro pedal knobs. And the enclosure is maybe a millimeter chunkier than your average mini pedal. But that is it - the only bad words I have to say bout it. A really good pedal - it seems to be flying under the radar? Seems like it would be great for bass too with the wet/dry blend and bright/dark switch - but i can't personally attest to that. If you are looking for a mini fuzz with clean blend, this is fantastic and massilvy recommended. I'm starting to really love the lil thing, it sounds great.
