Maroon 5 axeman James Valentine is known for his eclectic mixture of funk/rock playing, and to accommodate his varied style he needed a guitar versatile enough to handle it.

That’s why he chose to work with industry giants Music Man. Together, they have created a guitar that perfectly combines great aesthetics, comfort and forward-thinking electronics, to give James the instrument that best meets his particular needs on the road and in the studio.

Construction

The Valentine consists of an Ash body, which provides a warm and full-bodied sound that serves as a great tonal foundation for the pickups. Complemented by a classy pickguard, this distinctive double-cutaway guitar enables fantastic access to the upper frets, especially with its recessed heel join.

An amazing feature of this instrument is its roasted maple neck, which guarantees better tuning stability and improved rigidity. The roasting process removes any moisture retained by the wood naturally, making it less likely to warp or develop any curvature from exposure to differing temperatures. In other words, this guitar will be incredibly reliable and hassle-free!

Electronics & Hardware

The James Valentine model features a host of premium features that pros will adore. Fitted with Music Man's chrome-plated modern tremolo system, this bridge provides a smooth action and ensures fantastic tuning stability, even after plenty of whammy abuse!

At the other end of the instrument you'll find a set of high-quality Schaller locking tuners, allowing you to change strings easily whilst also decreasing the chance of tuning slips, as less wraps around the tuning posts are required. The body end truss rod wheel adjustment makes setup changes super easy, although with a rock-solid roasted maple neck, you won’t have to tinker with it too often!

An S/H pickup configuration gives you spanky T-style tones, similar to one of Valentines’ favourite vintage guitars. Despite having a single-coil fitted in the bridge position, which gives you amazing funk sounds, the pickup can still handle plenty of gain and delivers a bright upper mid-range crunch. The neck humbucker gives you warm tones suited for lead playing or clean passages, sounding full and clear.

A 3-way selector switch lets you isolate the pickups or combine the two for the best of both worlds, but the 12dB boost circuit is the ace up this guitar's sleeve. Just push the volume control in, and you’ll get a pure clean boost to take your signal up a notch!
