Here's what Gon Bops say about the Alex Acuna Campana Bell
The Alex Acuna Campana Bell is modeled after bells Alex has collected over a lifetime. With flat playing surfaces and flashy chrome-plated looks, Alex Acuna bells have a more open sound, perfect for timbale and drumset applications. Like Alex, these bells work well with just about any style of music! Constructed from special tempered steel with overlap seams and clean weld joints to ensure durability and musicality. The Alex Acuna Campana Bell includes Gon Bops patented V-Grip mount with memory lock to fit 9.5mm to 12mm rods.
The History of Gon Bops
In 1954 in his father’s garage in downtown Los Angeles Mariano Bobadilla first created Gon Bops. A play on his nickname ‘Bob’ and slang from the time ‘Gone’, Gon Bops took traditional Cuban drum shapes and introduced ground breaking innovation.
Everything from rounded hardware to protect the player’s hands to tunable congas and bongos came from the mind of Bobadilla. It’s these now everyday innovations that have made Gon Bops a favourite with percussion players around the world.
As major competitors began moving production off shore, Bobadilla refused to compromise on build quality and kept Gon Bops manufacturing in the US. As a result they met with financial difficulties and closed their doors in the 80’s.
In 2001, DW bought Gon Bops seeing the brand for what it was - a melting pot of quality, innovation and tradition. And the finally in 2010, Sabian president Andy Zildjian bought the company. Gon Bops still produce instruments favoured by players like Alex Acuna, Poncho Sanchez and Jose Hernandez.
Here’s what Sabian president Andy Zildjian has to say about Gon Bops.
“We’re excited to begin this new chapter in SABIAN and Gon Bops history”, notes Andy Zildjian. “Gon Bops instruments are a perfect blend of vintage craftsmanship and innovative thinking. Since its founding in 1954, the company has pioneered several features and improvements that have forever changed Latin instruments. The pursuit of the best sound is what our craftsmen work for every day. We know the fit is perfect, above all, because sound matters.”
