The Gibson Explorer was released alongside the Flying V in the late 1950s to mixed reaction. It rewrote the design rulebook for the electric guitar, but many saw it as too radical - fast forward to the 21st Century, and this incredible instrument still stands out and divides opinion. Gibson's 2018 Explorer Elite features a number of design tweaks that strike the balance between old-school cool and world-class precision.
Body & Neck
The body is solid Mahogany, ensuring brilliant resonance and an articulate mid-range. Mahogany makes another appearance for the neck, with a familiar 24.75" scale length and Slim Taper profile.
This Explorer is an absolute breeze to play, retaining a classic vibe but accommodating for the needs of modern playing styles. For the Elite model, Gibson have opted for a Baked Granadillo fretboard. Much of their 2019 line-up has returned to Rosewood, but Granadillo is known as ‘the wood that sings’ – its density gives it a unique harmonic richness. We’ll take that.
Pickups & Electronics
It’s a Burstbucker double-bill for the 2018 Explorer Elite. The BB2 in the neck position projects that famed warm, bottom-end-friendly tone that Gibsons are known for - brilliant for rich cleans and soaring leads. In the bridge position, the BB3 delivers a well-rounded snarl, brilliantly matched with cranked valve overdrive and bluesy fuzz tones.
Hardware
Next up, Gibson have employed their go-to Tune-O-Matic bridge - this is the tried-and-tested Gibson solid-body formula. It’s efficient and hardy in functionality, especially when combined with their signature stop bar.
Gold plating, black speed knobs and a gorgeous Aged Cherry complete the picture – this classy take on the Explorer design looks set to be a real head-turner.

How do I use instant finance?
