Product Description

The Explorer was first introduced in 1958 to a mixture of reactions. Even now, it's a body shape that turns heads and stands out from the crowd - imagine what it must've been like back then!

Despite a ground-breaking design that was years ahead of its time, the initial run of Explorers was short-lived, alongside it's pointy counterpart, the Flying V; those original instruments are among some of the priciest and most sought-after in the world.

One of the other things that set it apart from the rest of Gibson's range was the use of korina as the main body wood. Korina proved to be a difficult wood to work with due to its unpredictable reactions to moisture; because of this, Gibson very quickly adopted mahogany as their body wood of choice - making original korina Explorers and Flying Vs even more valuable and elusive!

Now Epiphone have set about paying tribute to the designer guitar that started it all; introducing the Limited Edition Korina Explorer!

The Body

Korina is known for having an incredibly balanced sound, similar to that of mahogany. It’s resilient and weighty, and delivers a warm, bass-friendly tone, though many argue it’s more desirable for its sweeter, more responsive midrange. It's also known for being susceptible to pronounced knots and stripes in the grain, which make for an interesting aesthetic - particularly in this guitar's case!

The Neck

The korina continues into the neck, allowing the density of the wood to fully resonate throughout the guitar's entire construction. You also have a '60s-style slim taper neck with a D-shape profile, which allows for easy navigation up and down while encouraging your hand to wrap around the neck's contours.

The Electronics

Epiphone have loaded this guitar with two of their Alnico Classic humbuckers; the bridge position pickup is slightly over-wound to deliver a hotter output, perfect for crispy rock riffs.

The aim of the game with these pickups was to offer a classic PAF-style humbucker sound, as close as possible to that found in the original Explorers. You've got individual volume controls for each pickup position and a master tone control, allowing for just the right amount of tonal tweaking, without getting complicated!

This beautiful instrument is polished off with striking gold hardware, a contrasting black scratchplate and top-hat knobs, and of course Grover tuners; get the authentic 1958 Explorer experience at a fraction of the cost and without 50 years of wear and tear!
