The Akai Professional MPK Mini Play is the standalone version of the popular MPK Mini Mk2 controller. Like the Mini Mk2, the Mini Play offers portability and MIDI control but also comes with 128 built-in sounds and an onboard speaker so you can use it without a computer. Perfect for spontaneous use when inspiration strikes, the MPK Mini Play is the perfect travel companion for the producer on-the-go.
No Computer Required
With 128 built-in sounds and an onboard speaker, the MPK Mini Play can be played virtually anywhere. The 25 mini keys and 8 backlit MPC pads allow you to jam using drum or keys sounds. The MPK Mini Play doesn't record or save your playing in standalone mode so its best used for impromptu playing and working out ideas, then you can connect it to a DAW to record. With its compact size, you can chuck the MPK Mini Play into a bag, take it anywhere, and then pull it out and start playing whenever inspiration strikes.
The speaker and OLED screen means you sacrifice the assignable Q-Link knobs that you find on the Mini Mk2, but the Mini Play still works great as a MIDI controller. The Mini Play doesn't require any drivers or set up, just plug it in via USB and you're ready to go. Go from playing out loud in standalone mode to controlling virtual instruments and triggering samples in your DAW in seconds.
The MPK Mini Mk2 comes with free software to help you jump right into making music. Included are virtual synths like Hybrid 3 by AIR Music Tech and Wobble by SONiVOX, as well as an MPC Essentials which offers MPC workflow in your DAW or as a standalone. MPC Essentials is a beat/groove production and sample-triggering software that expands the MPK Mini with up to 8 pad banks as well as 4 samples and insert effect per pad. You also get a free download of Akai Professional's VIP3.0 software which offers greater hardware/software integration for improved control over VST instruments and effects. If you don't already have a DAW to make music in you're in luck. The MPK Mini Play comes with Avid Pro Tools First, a streamlined version of their industry-level audio production and recording software.
