BOSS has created many iconic guitar effects over the years, innovating countless cutting-edge circuits and constantly pushing the sonic boundaries. However, BOSS' new TB-2W pedal is a slightly different affair; paying homage to one of the earliest and most significant stompboxes ever created — the legendary Tone Bender MkII fuzz.

Made in collaboration with Sola Sound, the company behind the original 1960s unit, this limited edition BOSS TB-2W Waza Craft pedal is an authentic recreation of the highly-coveted Tone Bender MkII — used by some of the greatest guitar players of all time. Captured on classic tracks from that magical musical era all the way through to today, the Tone Bender's distinctive voice lives on through the TB-2W - promising the same bold and sustain-rich sound that has defined so many renowned rock and pop tracks, with several modern-day refinements up its sleeve!

Inspired by a "Masterpiece"

To design its TB-2W, BOSS used what is regarded as the finest example of the Tone Bender in existence as a reference — the "masterpiece" MkII (serial number 500) from Sola Sound's archive. BOSS' engineers meticulously replicated the pedal’s mythical tone and expressive dynamic response through detailed Waza craftsmanship.

The TB-2W comes equipped with rare germanium transistors carefully-tested for optimum tone, with a 3-way voltage selector switch letting you shape the unit's tone and response to preference. A refined circuit guarantees ultra-consistent performance from pedal-to-pedal, with selectable true/buffered bypass operation a further contemporary enhancement.

The Story Behind the TB-2W

The Tone Bender is one of the world's most revered fuzz boxes, possessing a unique timbre that has been embraced by some of the most important guitar players in history. Under the Sola Sound brand, Macari’s Musical Instruments in London produced numerous variations from the mid-1960s, but many consider the “MkII” version to be the ultimate Tone Bender.

BOSS and Sola Sound first discussed uniting on a Tone Bender MkII pedal in 2017. Several technical issues arose, such as power supply considerations and resistance to environmental changes, but they both realised that sourcing the rare and vitally-important germanium transistors at the heart of the circuit would be the key factor in achieving their goal. Working through one challenge after another, they were able to overcome them all with no compromise — through dogged determination and careful attention to the finest details.

Adjustable Voltage Switch

The original Tone Bender was designed to run on a 9-volt zinc-carbon battery, and its circuit was notoriously sensitive to voltage changes that affected the pedal's gain and feel as the battery gradually wore down. In the Waza Craft tradition of making classic analogue formulas better with modern tweaks, the TB-2W features an adjustable voltage circuit that lets you replicate these changes — and more — at the flick of a switch!

Via the 3-way battery selector, you can instantly change the response of the pedal — whether powering it from an alkaline battery or an external power supply. The 9V setting provides the sound of a brand-new battery with the benchmark Tone Bender character. The 7V mode mimics the effect of a slightly depleted battery, producing a "saggy" gain response favoured by some Tone Bender aficianados. Choosing the 12V setting takes things in the other direction, offering expanded dynamic range that’s not possible with the original pedal.

Selectable Output Modes

Another convenient addition is the TB-2W’s two output modes, which can be easily selected with a switch at the top of the pedal. Thru mode is best for a vintage pedal experience, providing true bypass operation when the pedal is off and original Tone Bender output impedance when the pedal is on. Buffer mode engages the same high-quality output buffer circuit found in all Waza Craft pedals — optimising the signal for downstream connections whether the TB-2W is on or off.

In any case, you’ll usually realise the best performance when the TB-2W is the first pedal in the signal chain, with no buffered signal in-between. This allows the pedal to fully interact with your guitar’s pickups for the desirable, interactive response that fuzz players love!
