Affordable Desktop Synth

Behringer have made a name for themselves in recent years by making desktop synthesisers accessible to the masses. The Wasp is one of the most coveted of the bunch, an instantly recognisable relic from the early days of digital synth experimentation.

It's no wonder, then, that Behringer have produced this delightful homage with an attractive price tag. Dual digital oscillators that cover 5 octaves and 3 waveforms (sawtooth, square and enhanced) offer tones that range from chunky to screaming. Bass, lead lines, noisy textures - the works.

Increased Control

Behringer have updated the Wasp Deluxe interface with more hands-on control and additional features to bring it up to speed. 29 control knobs, to be precise. Total MIDI and USB connectivity means that it can be easily incorporated into your existing setup, DAW or not.

A flexible LFO gives you 6  waveforms to play with, from sine wave to random. A noise generator can be mixed into any of your patches for extra fizz or percussive sound design. A 3-type variable VCF can be combined with a VCA envelope to give your leads and baselines movement and wobble. A brilliantly authentic, accessible and downright inspiring synthesiser, the Wasp Deluxe will be at home in any setup!

As a big fan of Add N to (X) I always yearned for a synth that sounded this perpetually enraged. The Wasp Deluxe is best at pure rock’n’roll evil, though it can be coaxed into being polite too. The filter is glorious — I’ve really enjoyed bunging the mini Behringer JT-4000 in supersaw mode through it via the Wasp’s external audio input. The hi-pass mode is brutal. Behringer have done a great job with this. It’s full of character, and worth £133 of anyone’s money (at the time of writing). If you’re even slightly on the fence, go for it…

Slightly faulty knob. Fixed it myself, but a bit bodged. At this price though, no big problem. I've heard it's a common problem with Behringer. Not Andertons fault.

Great recreation of a great synth. I remember playing with one of these in the 80s and this feels just the same. A unique sound.

The Wasp is a nice little synth, especially at the price I paid. Through some distortion, it sounds really angry! The filter is super versatile. I have a Doepfer Wasp filter module, and the Behringer isn't as aggressive/crazy in extreme settings, but nevertheless it sounds great and is extremely usable for bass, leads and pads. There's a video of me comparing them on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJThijCnQ18 The Wasp is an eccentric synth, and all the better for it. Feels a tiny bit cheaply made, but then again, it costs less than a basic Eurorack module. It came with two siezed pots that broke the knobs when turned but Andertons responded immediately and replaced them, very good service!

Such a great synth considering the modest price. Gives you the classic Wasp sound. Not the most versatile synth, but excellent at what it does. You can have fun with this synth without stressing over how much you spent on it!

Once I found my pliers and made the octave switches (etc.) move, it behaved beautifully and does remind me of my dear old Wasp. The filter's great, the positive and negative modulation pretty flexibly and the LFO does what you'd hope. It's not the most versatile synth maybe but being able to use the filter input to process drums is a brilliant extra string to its bow. Setting the oscillators to unison meant putting DCO2 at something like two or three O'clock but I'm used to that - plus getting A-440 was right at the left-most limit of the main tune control, but neither things are an issue really and there's probably some adjustment available if it does bother me. I vaguely recall the oscillators of my Wasps of old moved at slightly different glide rates when glide was engaged and this does something similar - would have to A/B to say how close it is but it's nice enough. All in all, can't go wrong for the money.
