Product Description

Are you looking to boost your backing instruments? Maybe you have a guitar, wind section, drums or percussion you need to project and are searching for a microphone that will do the job? The AKG P4 High-Performance Dynamic Microphone can help you! With exceptional tonal clarity and precision performance, the P4 Mic offers responsive sound at a humble price! Sound is picked up from the front of the mic via its cardioid polar pattern technology and continues to mask any unwanted overspill noise from behind, also helping to prevent feedback!

What AKG say about the P4 High-Performance Dynamic Microphone:

The Perception P4 high-performance dynamic instrumental microphone delivers intense sound for use on drums, percussion, wind instruments and guitar amps. The cardioid polar pattern makes it very easy to use, as it focuses on sound in front of the microphone while reducing feedback and unwanted noise from behind.

The Perception P4 comes in a solid metal case to withstand tough day-by-day stage use. An integrated stand adapter for snare, tom-tom and the like makes this microphone highly versatile and easy to use. The package also includes a zip bag for safe transport and storage.

Key Features:

  • For sound pressure levels up to 157dB handles extremely loud instruments without any distortion
  • Built-in hum compensation coil rejects EMC noise for the cleanest sound

It's called a 'drum' mic, but it's much more than that. I am using 4 of them in a professional radio broadcast environment, (if only the client knew!) These mics are perfect for radio speech broadcasting; look at the specs and you'll see why they are much more flexible than a 'drum' mic would at first appear. I should have kept this as my secret!

I've been testing this AKG P4 against the similar looking but slightly more expensive AKG D40 for the past few days, and for most applications, I prefer the P4. They've both got a high maximum SPL of over 150dB, and both have a similar strong output signal. Because of this, I suspect the P4 also has a neodymium magnet like the D40, but AKG provide very little info on any of the mics in the Performer live series (no frequency charts or polar response diagrams). Both have the ingenious built-in mic clip adapter that handles both 3/8" and 5/8" stand threads (though to use the 3/8" thread you need to remove any locking washer on the stand's thread to allow the stand thread far enough into the clip to engage with the inset 3/8" thread). The P4's got a nice tight polar pattern, so works well live and does a good job of recording amplified guitar. It lacks the deeper low end of the D40; which can be both a good thing or a bad thing depending on application. It can stop some sounds from becoming muddy, and reduces a guitar's encroachment into frequencies occupied by bass guitar and kick drum. But for some jobs, like miking a floor tom, you could do with the extended bass end of the P40. However the large rear polar lobes of the P40 lead to much earlier feedback when used live, so the P4 scores highly here. The P4 even makes a good vocal mike if stand mounted, being slightly clearer and less boomy sounding than an SM58. For the price of an SM57, you could buy two of these mics and still have a few pounds to spare. If only The P4 had a slightly stronger low-end, it would be near-perfect.

I have used other AKG tom mics that have not performed as well as the P4. A very good drum mic.

A better service on this occasion, but still left waiting because they could not find the items as they were not in the place they should be.

Great product - using it to amplify a Fender Blues Junior through a PA and it picks up the speaker sound perfectly with little or no background noise.
