Is there a cooler looking bass than the Gibson Thunderbird? Well if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The Nashville-based guitar builders have delivered more of the T-Bird by popular demand.
It’s a hefty beast at a 34-inch scale length. With its asymmetrical, weighty Mahogany body it feels huge to play and attracts all the attention.
Body and neck
The classic neck-through-body is a constant design feature for the Thunderbird, providing incredible access to upper frets. It’s made of a stunningly smooth nine-ply Mahogany and Walnut mix. Because these woods are extremely dense, it holds solid tuning stability.
On top is a light, aged-looking Rosewood fretboard with a slightly rounded profile. Effortless to play. Embedded are 20 cryogenically-treated frets which undergo the process for longevity, and less susceptibility to wear and rust.
It may look like a vintage bass but it’s anything but that in sound. The pair of high-output T-Bird pickups are huge. There’s a reason past models have been popular in rock and metal, and this continues the trend.
It’s not all high-octane though. You can subtly tweak output with its two independent volume knobs and a master tone. Dial it down and you’ll get good modern cleans.
The 3-point adjustable bridge is a real highlight. Comfortable for the picking hand using palm mutes. Incredible sustain. And great resonance as it’s partially inserted into the body, allowing the rumble to travel through the Mahogany.
A Tektoid nut and Grover tuners are a standard across the Gibson 2019 range. And for good reason, as they cut out any tuning problems and string friction.
