Polyphonic Powerhouse

Novation are known for producing world-class mono and polysynths. The Summit elevates the company’s creativity and knowledge on polyphony to new heights. Each of the 16 voices available to you are powered by 3 oscillators, making for a truly dense and vibrant tonal palette.

Those familiar with Novation, particularly the Peak, will have observed that the Summit features one of the company’s most comprehensive user interfaces to date. Huge filter functionality, comprehensive amp & mod envelopes, in-depth FM routing; you can twist and tweak your sound at pretty much any point. The result is a near-endless selection of tones that’ll take care of just about any style.

Analog meets Digital

The oscillators are arguably the headline feature here. Using the increasingly popular FPGA technology, the New Oxford oscillators offer analog-style sound with the massive flexibility of digital technology. It’s a win-win – combine with 16-voice polyphony, and you’re in for a real tonal treat.

Once the oscillators have generated your tone, the signal path runs through several stages of analog circuitry. Dual filters, distortion and analog VCAs; the result is a warm, dynamic sound that’s distinctly analog in character. Each voice offers true stereo output, with numerous modulation assignments and effects to add the final finesse to your sound. Pumping basslines, glittering leads or otherworldly sound design – the Summit can literally do it all.

Great synth, I’ve only owned it for a few weeks so I haven’t spent a massive amount of time with it but I’ve been having a lot of fun programming sounds and playing it. I purchased it to complement my MatrixBrute and PolyBrute and it seems to be serving that purpose well. The 16 voice polyphony, digital oscillators/wavetables, analogue filters and effect section add up to a great sound. Very happy with the purchase.

The main reason why I chose the Summit was due to the control surface. I’m not a great lover of diving down into menus and sub menu after sub menu even on a large display. The majority of control is right out in front of you via knobs and sliders that offer the control as described for analogue sound design approach even though the instrument is not totally analogue. The architecture re signal path / flow is easy to work with and I personally feel “ in touch “ and “ in control “ of the instrument. There are at least 4 other OEM’s that make similar instruments re spec and but not all with this ease of control. The build quality is good and the sound is down to your creativity.

Built like a tank, hugely versatile sound engine (though would be even better if it included samples), feels like this thing will last 20 years easily (which is just as well considering the justifiable but expensive price). Yes, it doesn't give anything soundwise that a plug-in wouldn't, excepting the beautiful analogue filter and distortion, but it is so much, nicer, quicker and quicker to use than a plug in and gets me away from the computer screen. Early days so far but this is the best and most fun synth I've ever had - and I used to own an SH-101, an Oberheim OB-1 and an OSCar. Bit of a dream machine - like a Jupiter 8, a Prophet 5 an Oberheim OB-Xa and a PPG Wave 2.2 all in one. Well done Novation!
