Every PRS instrument is built to make a statement, and the Special Semi-Hollow sticks to the company's ethos - to create stunning, elegant instruments that emit only the finest tones possible. With a fresh yet familiar look, the Special Semi-Hollow closely resembles the stunning John Mayer signature Super Eagle models from previous years.
With gorgeous aesthetics, fantastic tonewood choices and top-grade electronics and hardware, this instrument is practically unmatched when it comes to build and sound quality.
As its name suggests, this limited edition model is built around its exquisite semi-hollow body. Giving you a vibrant and highly-resonant sound even when unplugged, this instrument truly sings when plugged into an amplifier.
The body's Mahogany back ensures a deep and rich tone, giving the Special Semi-Hollow some essential low-end warmth for jazz or blues tones. Topped with a beautiful Flamed Maple top, this material also serves an important tonal purpose, bringing in some crucial and bright top-end that gives plenty of crisp definition to notes and chords.
Maintaining PRS' tried-and-tested tonewood combinations, the body is paired with a Mahogany neck, featuring the brand's "pattern vintage" neck carve. Feeling substantial and solid in the left hand, this particular shape provides a familiar feel for traditionalists, with its thicker size and asymmetrical design ensuring great support for the thumb at all areas of the neck.
Adorned with a sleek Rosewood fretboard for optimal playability, PRS' signature Mother of Pearl bird inlays contribute an extra layer of class to an already spectacular-looking guitar.
In terms of versatility, an H/S/H pickup configuration is difficult to beat. That's why the PRS Special Semi-Hollow is arguably one of the company's most diverse instruments, featuring a dual dose of 58/15 MT humbuckers and a Narrowfield single-coil in the middle position.
The 58/15s are notorious for delivering that classic PAF-style sound, but with improved consistency and better balance across the frequency spectrum. Their medium output makes them ideal for both clean and overdriven tones, and they can be split to single coils via the dedicated push/pull tone control, with no loss in volume.
The Narrowfield pickup delivers the bite and clarity of a single-coil pickup, which works brilliantly in conjunction with the humbuckers. When using positions 2 and 4 on the 5-way blade switch, you can attain those distinctive, chimey out-of-phase tones.
Poor hardware can let down even the best of guitars, which is why the Special Semi-Hollow is fitted with some of the most finely-machined parts available. PRS' Phase III Locking Tuners ensure super-easy string changes, with their locking design also improving tuning stability as less winds are required around the machinehead posts.
At the other end of the instrument, the Gen III Tremolo has the class-leading quality you'd expect from a PRS instrument. With a wonderfully-smooth action, the tremolo's high-mass design ensures maximum string vibration transference through the guitar's body, giving you unparalleled levels of sustain.
