FXpansion BFD ECO Virtual Drum Plugin

Finally you can enjoy the great sounds of BFD on a budget. BFD Eco is a light version of BFD2 with all the essential features kept intact, as well as some of the luxury ones like mic bleed! BFD Eco is the fun, affordable and simple to use virtual drum instrument that bases itself on the industry standard software in this application.

BFD Eco is the perfect solution for drummers, composers and project studio owners who need to record drums in places where it is impractical to record an acoustic kit. The plugin can of course be triggered by MIDI data from a sequencer, controller keyboard or electronic drum kit.

And if you're wondering "what does BFD stand for?" - well - no one really knows! Though plenty of people have their opinion on what it may be. We cannot print the speculation.

Reviews

  • "BFD Eco's interface won us over, with the split screen design making it easier to use than BFD2. In a similar vein, the simple drum track system sidesteps the complexities of BFD2's grid-style groove programmer."
  • "All in all, BFD Eco is a surprisingly powerful drum instrument given its price point, and is backed up by a great add-on library, but power users will still prefer the more option-rich BFD2."
  • "Pros: Easy kit, mixer and channel presets. Excellent split-screen interface. Expandable through BFD add-ons. Usable groove presets. Competitive price."
  • "Cons: Auditioning not ideal. Occasionally inconsistent round robin."
  • "Verdict: Eco offers a sensible combination of ease of use and flexibility, all with BFD's famously good sound."

Nice and simple to use. Lots of good loops to play around with which can help get you started on a track. Great value for money.

This is a great piece of kit, with fanstic sound quality, but does have it's limitations.

Great selection of drums kits with superb quality fully layered sounds, and full control over levels, tibre and room accoustics.

Also included is a varied selection of grooves which can be arranged on a track and output as midi or audio, but the grooves cannot be edited.

BFD ECO works as a stand alone program or plugin, but is not fully compatible with older versions of VST, so beware!

I don't think you'd get a better virtual drummer for less money than BFD Eco. The sound shaping, mixing and FX facilities are incredible at this price and are its best feature for me. The worst feature is the "anti machine gunning" facility which just sounds like a drummer with no idea of dynamics, but you don't have to use that. The supplied "grooves" are sensible and usable rather than flashy, impressive but ultimately unusable. As I bought this in January 2012 I was eligible for the free upgrade to v1.5 (download) which actually improves the kit with some extra (and better IMO) kicks, toms and snares.

Good as it is, I wouldn't say it's the best drum software available. But in its class/price, against EZ Drummer-Drummatix etc, it's probably the best and most affordable which is why I gave it five stars. Buy it now before fxpansion and Andertons realise they're selling it too cheap. At twice the price it would still be good value.
