M-Audio Fast Track w/ Pro Tools SE

The M Audio Fast Track has been a popular interface for some years, ideally suited for singer / songwriters who only need to record vocals and a guitar.  M-Audio have finally added phantom power and now with Pro Tools SE, this is the perfect USB audio interface for those on a budget!

This is what M-Audio say about the Fast Track with Pro Tools SE

Turn your computer into a powerful music production studio with the M-Audio Fast Track-the best-selling recording interface in its category. Featuring a simple "plug-and-play" USB connection, Fast Track is the easiest way to record guitar, vocals and more with your PC or Mac. Simply plug in your instruments and you're ready to rock. Fast Track even offers phantom power so you can use professional-quality studio condenser microphones like the M-Audio Nova. Fast Track is compatible with most popular music recording applications from GarageBand to studio-standard Pro Tools M-Powered*, and includes easy-to-use Pro Tools SE software so you can start making music immediately.

* Fast Track is compatible with Pro Tools M-Powered 8 and higher.

  • 1/4” instrument input - record guitar, bass and keyboards
  • phantom powered XLR mic input - use dynamic and studio-grade condenser microphones
  • stereo RCA outputs - easily connects to your stereo system or powered monitors

This a really great unit for a basic studio set up. Records at 48khz which allows for reasonable quality recordings and is completely free of latency. One problem is that I sat for 5 hours trying to get it to work. Had to uninstall the drivers and reinstall 3 times before I had any luck but it all works perfectly after a bit of time.

I needed something quick for my laptop as the laptop sound chip does not support ASIO. I took a risk and got the M-Audio Fast track II with Pro Tools SE software bundled with it. Unfortunatly I am not and probably will never be a Pro Tools User so I can only judge this item on Cakewalk Sonar and Reaper. I found it worked great with both but more so with Sonar when using soft synths. However over all it was a bargain at the price so I am very pleased with it.

I've decided to step up to the next stage of home recording since using a Boss Micro BR for the last year. This offers fantastic value for what you get. Easy to use once you're set up and good quality. The instructions that come with the pack aren't particularly helpful for someone that has never used an audio interface but its all easily manageable in the end.

Brilliant!!! I look forward to learning more about it and know that I can with this software and hardware pack.

    Very tidy.

This is a great purchase if you are looking to be able to record from home and still afford to live. There are no faults with it what so ever really. The software, however is very cut back from the full version of Pro Tools so as long as you are ok with sitting down and figuring out all the changes this is the one for you. If you need this to learn more about Pro Tools itself then you will need to look into getting a more full version of the software.

Great value for a quality bit of kit that's very portable.

Very very good of kit - although the M-Audio interface keeps making my PC loop when I shut it down, and now Pro-Tools doesn't recognise it....

Apart from that, it's well worth it though!

An awesome little box. Installation is very easy, I've tried it with both Windows XP and Windows 7 and both are excellent.

Been using it exactly how it was made for; with a mirophone in the XLR and a guitar/bass in the 1/4 jack socket, just make sure you select the right input source in your recording software! The drivers that come with it allow for extremely fast playback even using live effects software such as Guitar Rig.

The variable gain on the inputs is extremely useful too, since no two guitars or mics are going to be the same volume output.

I couldn't be happier with my M-Audio FastTrack!

I can fully recommend the Fast Track, it ticked all the boxes for my student's intended purpose, ie phantom-powered mic input, small and USB-powered, easy to use & comes with Pro Tools M-Powered Essentials, an ideal way to get to grips with Pro Tools and with an upgrade scheme to Pro Tools M-Powered. And all at a bargain price!

An excellent and relatively inexpensive solution to basic home recording on your pc/mac. Works excellently with Garageband and the sound quality is good.

Also, the fact that this has a phantom power option means that upgrading my SM58 to a decent studio mic will not make this redundant.
