Product Review - Moog Little Phatty Stage II
If you want the classic Moog sound in a compact package, this is the one for you. The instrument comes with 100 preset sounds, but these are a mixed bag. Most I think are weaker than the set provided with the original LP Tribute and Stage I’s, but there are a few that shine out - ‘4 Wakeman’ is a sweet lead, while ‘Darque & Hard’ is a full bass with an edge. But as we all know, if you own a Moog (or any other analogue synth), you’ll spend quite a bit of time creating about 4 or 5 classic leads and basses and then stick with those for live performance, so the ability to edit and overwrite the presets is welcome. You can change the names, and also create performance sets to get at the sounds that you use most often. Creating these is not overly complex - the user interface is intuitive, and surprisingly effective.
Overall build quality is very good - the synth has a solid feel to it even when playing hard. The keyboard itself has a nice weight, and the velocity sensitivity is just right. Pitch and Mod wheels are just where you want them, to the left of the keyboard, and handily just below the octave shifters.
The machine features full MIDI support, and the inclusion of a USB port on the Stage II is welcome, but a gripe is that Moog seem to charge for the editor software, whereas other makers (such as Korg, for the Micro X) allow you to download it free.
As a schoolboy growing up listening to the likes of Tomita, Wakeman, Emerson et al (I’m now the wrong side of 50) I dreamt of one day owning a Moog, and I can happily say it’s been worth the wait.
A word about the store - although I’ve used Andertons very efficient mail order service before this purchase, I used the Reserve and Collect option this time, and had no problems parking right outside the store. Both instrument and retailer highly recommended.
