Alesis M1 Active 520 Monitors
If you want reference monitors on a budget, the Alesis M1 Active range provide great value for money. Trusted by people the world over, these monitors give a distinct reference point with clear bass, smooth mid-range and tight top end, at a price you can't argue with. These monitors are one of the best selling ranges at the moment, and there's a reason.
Here's what Alesis say about the M1 Active 520 monitors
The new M1 Active 520 reference monitor continues the Alesis tradition of building premium studio monitors at a great price. The M1 Active 520 offers incredible definition and flat frequency response with the help of high-precision drivers and a carefully designed crossover. The rear-port provides deep bass-extension and high SPL output, and the four rear-mounted EQ switches allow the user to tailor the speaker to the studio environment. The M1 Active 520's 1" thick front baffle minimizes speaker resonance and the visually stunning acoustic waveguide evenly disperses high-frequency sound across your control room. The M1Active 520 has our new Bass Density control, which allows you to tailor these monitors to any kind of control room setting regardless of room placement.
Finally, the distinctive top-mounted power/clip indicator lets you know if the speaker is clipping.

Great sounding small monitors. I am amazed how neutral they sound in my small studio (read that as the single bedroom) which has bare walls and no acoustic treatment whatsoever. Good detailed mids and smooth highs. You can adjust the EQ controls on the back to suit your room/position. I found them best left flat. Sure the sound is lacking in deep bass but what can you expect from 5" speakers. However, the low frequencies you do hear are clearly defined and not muddy. The volume is ample for a home studio, I have mine set around 40% of max. At £169.99 I reckon these are probably the best sub £200 active monitors you can buy? I would have preferred KRKs but my budget couldn't stretch to £250. These work perfectly with most of my gear but... my only bug bear is that despite using balanced leads there is a ground loop with my PC. Grrrr... darn computers!
