Blue Mikey Stereo Microphone and Speaker for iPod
Blue Microphones Mikey
The Mikey from Blue Microphones is a portable, hi-fidelity, stereo microphone that integrates seamlessly with your iPod allowing you to record professional quality audio wherever you might be! Whether you want to record jams, song ideas, or meetings and interviews - the Mikey delivers without you having to worry about unintelligible, low-fi sound or loss of inspiration.
Mikey is compatible with the iPod 5G, iPod nano 2G, 3G and 4G, as well as the iPod classic. Mikey does NOT work with iPhone 4.
What's more, if you have an iPod Touch 2G or iPhone, with the help of the Mikey - you can turn it into a 4-track recorder that fits in your pocket thanks to this very cool Four Track App that you can get from the App store!
Please note: the pictured Four Track software is not included but can be found at the App Store. The Mikey works with the iPods built-in software too though!
Mikey fever is spreading around the Andertons office, and our purchasing assistant Karl liked the Mikey so much that he wanted to let everyone know just how great this little gadget is! We asked him some questions to find out what the Mikey can do.
How do you use your Mikey?
Mostly I use my Mikey for home recording in conjunction with the Four Track application (which can be found at the App Store online). I think all in all I have spent around £65 for the Mic and the application and I have to tell you there is no better value for money out there. A mobile four track recorder with the ability to layer in studio quality a definite must have for ANY musician who wants the option to record on the go!
I have also recorded live gigs with it which have come out extremely well! It has 3 different modes which are used for different gain settings so it doesnt matter how loud or how quiet your recording is, it will pick it up clearly.
The uses for the Mikey are almost endless though... You could record meetings, podcasts, or just quick notes. The sound quality is excellent, as you'd expect from a company like Blue, so you'll never be struggling to hear what you recorded.
How does it work if you don't have the Four Track App?
You dont need the fourtrack in order to use the Mikey - it works straight out of the box with the software on the iPod. It isn't just for the iPod Touch either, it works with almost every type of iPod you can buy. There are other recording applications it will work with too, as well as the Guitar Toolkit App which has a ridiculously accurate guitar tuner which can only be used if you have a microphone!
What do you like best about the Mikey?
The biggest plus for me is that I can have it on me at all times due to its size. It's always available to me for any inspirational moment throughout the day. I don't even have to worry about replacing any batteries in the Mikey because it runs off my iPod's juice!
Is the Mikey good value for money?
It's only £59, so yes! - excellent value for money, and its made by Blue Microphones so you cant really go wrong.
So there you have it - and we can vouch for several more happy Mikey owners too! Just a few years ago, you couldn't have imagined being able to record your jams on-the-go without chunky equipment. This revolution means anyone can record great music in style, without the cost. Get your Mikey now before Blue realise and double the price!

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will this work with the iPhone or the iPhone 3G?
A: Yes! You will need to switch to airplane mode to record, and you may receive a message saying that the mic is not supported, but recording software should recognise the Mikey despite this warning.
Q: My iPod headphone socket is on the bottom so the Mikey blocks it when I plug it in! How can i use headphones?
A: On some iPods, the headphone socket is blocked off when you plug in the Mikey. This isn't a problem if you are doing live stereo recordings, but it does mean it's difficult to do overdub recordings. If your headphones have a small plug (like iPod earbuds) it will still fit, but there are other solutions...
It is possible to buy dock extender cables so the Mikey can be placed further from your iPod. Alternatively, if your iPod or iPhone has Bluetooth, you can use a set of wireless Bluetooth headphones.

I bought a Mikey to try out on rehearsals and jams so we don't have to set up a mixing desk etc. etc. It's proved to be a fantastic purchase - we had to experiment to get the placement and recording volumes right, and now we can record everything we play for future analysis and really hear everything. It's a great little tool. Cheers, Chris.

Had the Mikey for a good few weeks now and it has become an indispensable companion. I use it with the Fourtrack and Fire apps running on my 32GB iphone 3GS. Everything works perfectly!! I've used it to record gigs, rehearsals and any song ideas i've had whilst I have been out and about. Having the different sensitivity levels really helps if I'm using Fourtrack to record a variety of different sources. I use Fire for recording gigs and rehearsals as it supports stereo recording using the Mikey. I've been so surprised by the clarity and also the headroom I have when recording a loud gig using Fire. I could go on and on about how cool the Mikey is.I can remember having to remove the banister when I was kid to fit my dads Fourtrack into the house. Now i've got one on my phone, he's had to buy one too!!!!

I have been using the Mikey for about a couple of months now and generally found it very usefull. I use it with the Fourtrack and found that it only records in mono but still verry good quality. I also have tried FiRe app running on my iphone 3G and found this app records in stereo and is easy to download to my computer I've used it to record live bands. I run a Charity event every year and allways looking for new bands to check out.
