Guitar enthusiasts are often taken by the random "mish-mash" guitars that can be found at car boot sales, pawn shops and in other people's attics! Fender have responded to this demand by creating a series of unique guitars using a deliberate mix of different Fender parts.

This limited run Mustang Special features an amazing 18 different tonal options using the pickup and coil selectors. The difference between this Mustang and a guitar put together by a hobbyist guitar builder is that you know that this Mustang special will look great, play great, and still have all the charm of a Pawn Shop guitar.

Difference between the Pawn Shop 2.0 Mustang Special and the old Pawn Shop Mustang Special

This version is made in Mexico, and features more-accessible truss rod adjustment (nut at the headstock end, rather than at the heel end).

Here's what Fender say about the Pawn Shop Mustang Special

The new Pawn Shop Series guitars draw inspiration from the eccentric and sometimes wildly innovative Fender creations of the mid-'60s and mid-'70s era that sometimes found their way to the outside world and into the more esoteric pages of Fender history. With this adventurous spirit in mind, Pawn Shop Series instruments emerge as all-new Fender guitars with a boldly creative alchemy of diverse Fender components. And while they are brand-new members of the Fender family crafted with thoroughly modern sound and quality, Pawn Shop Series instruments now take the stage with a remarkable new identity as "guitars that never were but should have been."

The Pawn Shop Mustang Special has a modified offset Mustang body, '60s "C"-shaped 24" short-scale maple neck, and dual Fender Enforcer humbucking pickups with '70s-style covers and unique switching. Other features include a rosewood fretboard with modern 9.5" radius and medium jumbo frets, pickup toggle switch, three-way coil selector slide switch for each humbucking pickup (enabling 18 different tonal options), mint green pickguard, '70s-style hard-tail Stratocaster bridge, vintage-style tuners and strap buttons, and deluxe gig bag.

Ordered from Andertons after being let down by another large online music store (sent the wrong guitar, didn't have the right one!).

No complaints about Andertons, arrived next day and they sorted out the missing gig-bag the day after.

Guitar is very good - really nice to play, with a pretty low action and no fret-buzz - also surprisingly light! Pickups seem good to me and there really is a wide range of tones available from the various pickup switches ("only" 15 combinations - despite what Fender says - they can't count!)

    I had two problems:

I had quite a bit of difficulty plugging in the lead - I fixed this by rotating the socket slightly: the socket tip contact was tight against the wood of the cavity, making it difficult for the lead to push it out the way when plugging in.

Second problem was a bit more complex: there was a fair bit of hum when not touching the strings. Found this explanation - http://www.guitarnuts.com/technical/noisebucket.php - which made sense to me. After putting some copper shielding tape inside the controls cavity (and ensuring it contacted the grounded metal plate) all was well.

I'm sure Andertons would have sorted these issues out, but I didn't want to be without the guitar. Knocked off one star for these problems - was tempted to knock off two, but that would've been unfair - it's a lovely instrument.

I took advantage of Anderton's '9 month interest free credit through Moneyway' offer to fund buying this guitar. This is a really good deal. The guitar was delivered free about a week earlier than expected and was absolutely immaculate. 'Made in Mexico' means high quality these days. Lovely guitar beautiful to play and wide range of tones. This is my first purchase from Andertons and I am impressed,
