The new 2012 Fender Kurt Cobain Mustang is based on a 1969 model with Cobain's own modifications including a body mounted Seymour Duncan JB humbucker in the bridge position and phase switches. The Fender Kurt Cobain Mustang has a classic mustang 24" scale length, C-shaped maple neck with urethane finish, 7.25-inch radius rosewood fingerboard with 22 vintage-style frets and vintage-style ivory dot inlays.
Especially interesting is the period correct 7.25 inch fretboard radius as the modern trend is towards flatter or compound radius fretboards. The vintage 7.25 radius will be sure to give this Mustang a truly unique feel that will appeal to rock and rollers and combined with the vintage frets the Fender Kurt Cobain Mustang is going to feel like a blast from the past in the best way!
The Fender Kurt Cobain Mustang is based on the 1969 Competition series that was a feature for many of Nirvana's tours and perhaps most famously featured in the Smells like Teen Spirt video. While the Fender Mustang has always been the baby of the Fender family it found great favour with the poster-boy of Grunge who modified his 1969 Competition Series Mustang to better suit the sound he was after. The 2012 Fender Kurt Cobain Mustang is true to vintage 1969 spec but includes the modifications made by Cobain: a Seymour Duncan JB pickup in the bridge and dual killswitch/phase selectors.
The Combination of Bridge Humbucker and neck Single coil allows for a big variety of tone from cascading bridge sounds through to smooth and smokey leads in the neck, but what really paints the grunge tone is the two pickups together especially sculpted by the phase switches and master tone and volume controls. The Fender Kurt Cobain Mustang can handle anything thrown at it.
In terms of playability the Fender Kurt Cobain Mustang features a true-to-vintage 7.25 inch fretboard radius, quite a curve by todays standards (9 or 10 inches are the modern standard) which offers the rare oppertunity to play a Fender that really does feel like a Leo-era 60s guitar. It also means you can get a proper fist full of this neck to really ring out some insane sustain.
