The Gibson Midtown Standard is a modern classic that fuses the style and acoustic elements of both Gibson's seminal ES-Series hollowbodies and the legendary Les Paul Solid body. The majority Mahogany construction gives the Midtown the power and sustain of a Les Paul while the body chambers and the f-holes in the maple top give the midtown some of the classic honk of the fabbled ES-335. This fusion gives you a versatile instrument with a vibe all of its own perfect for those that want Gibson tone but with something a little different. The P90 pickups further enhance that vibe giving you a biting tone with the punch of a humbucker but the grit of a singlecoil.

Finished in the very popular Pelham Blue, a modern classic finish.

Here's what Gibson say about the Midtown Custom P90

By merging the best attributes of Gibson's legendary solidbody and archtop electric guitars, the Midtown Standard and Midtown Custom of 2011 became instant hits with players of all stripes. Now Gibson USA taps those same irresistible qualities and adds a vintage-vibed twist to create a stunning new performer: the Midtown Standard P-90. This great new guitar maintains its predecessors' trimmed-down and more player-friendly body size that still emulates the lines of Gibson's classic archtops, but which is built with the Midtown line's advanced chambered, solid-wood construction (rather than laminated top and back) to truly embody the optimum marriage of solidbody and archtop. To take the Midtown Standard P-90 anywhere from raw vintage rock, blues and funk to contemporary jazz, Americana, or whatever you want to throw at it, Gibson USA loads the guitar with a pair of fat- and rich-sounding P-90 single-coil pickups, and dresses it all in a hand-sprayed, high-gloss nitrocellulose finish in your choice of Fireburst, Vintage Sunburst, Heritage Cherry Sunburst, Wine Red or Pelham Blue. Hardshell case included.

This for me was the most expensive guitar I have bought (so far :) haha) so on the way to the shop I was anxious because it was a lot of money to part with. But my worries were silenced before I'd even played it, when the guy opened the case and I saw the Pelham Blue colour in the flesh I could tell I would be leaving with it haha.

The Midtowns have been described as a blend of Les Pauls and the ES series which is a great description. Thankfully for me it has enough of the ES sound characteristics to fill the semi hollow position in my arsenal. Unplugged its very loud but maybe not quite as deep and full sounding as a 335 would be. Plugged in the P90's chime when clean and growl with some dirt as you'd want them to. You can get some nice full sounding chords and blues shuffles but also some nice les paul worthy sustain for your lead work (best of both worlds :) ).

The controls are simplistic, just volume tone and pick up selector. I like this because it's just like a telecaster, nice and simplistic and it means you don't spend too long trying to dial in tones with the controls and just get straight to getting them with ya fingers.

I'd really recommend trying these guitars or any Midtowns to anyone who's interested (don't be put off by the flat tops it's not as weird as you'd think).

Great guitar and great service from everyone I dealt with at Andertons as well.
