Here's what Epiphone say about the Dot Royale
The Epiphone Dot Goes Uptown with the Dot Royale. The Epiphone Dot was introduced over ten years ago, and since then, Epiphone's version of the venerable Gibson ES-335 "Dot" has been wowing guitar players all over the world. Now, the DotRoyale gives the ES-335 Dot tradition a whole new makeover with a stunning pearl white finish, gold sparkle binding and gold hardware totally unlike anything Epiphone has offered before. Though Epiphone was long famous for its own original semi-hollowbody models from the 1960's Kalamazoo, Michigan era, including the Riviera and Sheraton, the simple, classic ES-335 style was missing, especially among the more affordable models. The introduction of the Epiphone Dot - called that in reference to it's simple "dot" fingerboard inlays - opened up the availability of the sustain and resonance of the semi-hollow design for a bounty less than most solid body guitars. Now with the Dot Royale, that classic sound has an all new look.
Semi-hollow Design, Solid Craftsmanship
The Dot Royale is constructed of premium laminated Maple including a Mahogany center block and a hand-fitted, glued-in Mahogany neck. Other details include a Rosewood fingerboard with traditional "Dot" inlay, quality electronic parts including full-size, 1" 500K Ohm potentiometers, Epiphone's all-metal pickup selector switch, historic metal Epiphone name "badge" on the headstock, and heavy-duty output jack. Its fabulous semi-hollowbody sound is voiced by a pair of real Alnico Classic Humbucker pickups. The pearl white finish and gold sparkle binding are complimented by a one-of-a-kind Epiphone gold pickguard. The Royale Dot sports gold hardware including premium 16:1 ratio Grover machine heads for superior tuning stability and accuracy. Also included as standard equipment on the Dot Royale is Epiphone's exclusive LockTone locking Tune-o-matic bridge and Stopbar tailpiece which yields even more sustain.

I just received my Epiphone Dot Royale yesterday the very next afternoon from when I placed the order. Many thanks to Matt who helped me deal with a few ordering glitches as a first timer with Andertons and who ensured my guitar made it onto the UPS truck in time. The guitar itself is a thing of beauty. No stock pics on the web do it justice. Sounds are everything I hoped for and more having tried a few at local shops. There are distinct and very useful differences between each p/up and the middle position, lots of variety of tone, mega sustain. This guitar elegantly fills the gap in my collection between my Yamaha acoustic and '96 Fender USA Tele. Worldwide stock issues mean I've yet to receive the free Epiphone hard case but it will be worth the wait. This has got to be a contender for deal of the year from a UK musical instrument retailer!

From the moment I took this guitar out of the shipping box I knew it was something special. The pearl white finish was flawless, as are the finishes on just about all the newer Epiphones made in their Chinese factory. The gold sparkle binding looks fabulous, every bit as good as the White Falcon. I tuned it up and had to give the truss rod a tweak but there was plenty of adjustment there and it came as straight as a gun barrel. Plugged into an Orange Tube Amp on a high gain setting with the EQ set flat, all knobs at 12 o'clock, it sounded like a fat Les Paul! No squeal and no noise. The Epiphone version of their parent company's PAF pickups are pretty good and every now and then, as was the case here, they're so good you wouldn't swap them. The sustain I achieved effortlessly at a very modest volume was truly impressive. I didn't want to put it down, but I had to so I could buy it!
So why only four stars if I loved it that much?
No fingerboard binding, that's why. It's kind of hard to see the tiny pearl dots on the side of the fingerboard, whereas if it had been bound with cream binding and had black dots blind Freddie wouldn't have a problem. That is an issue I have with the Epiphone Dot series.
