Take your studio with you at the end of the session. That doesn't mean scratching around on a smart phone, that means the Tascam Portastudio DP24 - everything you need from tracking right through to mastering! Record up to 8 tracks at the same time with the 8 built in combo XLR/Line ins, then mix how nature intended (with faders!) on board using the powerful FX procession including guitar amp simulation! Finally when it's time to master you're covered too by the DP-24s mastering plug ins! When you're done burn it to CDR without ever having touched a computer!

Here's what Tascam say about the iU2

TASCAM's DP-24 is a 24-track Digital Portastudio with solid-state recording, a color LCD and channel strip controls to make recording simple so you stay creative. Up to eight tracks can be recorded at a time through its combination XLR and 1/4" combo jacks. Input processing like compression and limiting are available during recording, as well as guitar amp simulation and multi-effects for use with the instrument-level input.

Once recorded, tracks can be viewed and mixed on the large color LCD and dedicated mixing controls like nineteen linear faders and a dozen channel strip encoders. Two Mixdown effects including reverb and chorus are also available, as well as a mastering effect. Once finished, songs can be transferred to computer over USB or written to CD with the built-in CD-RW drive.

With its great sound, powerful features and easy operation, the DP-24 is TASCAM's best Portastudio yet.

I always believed in Teac Tascam products so I was excited to start recording on the DP-24. It's everything everyone says it is, solid machine, ease of use, great sound. Only one problem....IT CRASHES. I could never record past 12 tracks without getting a WRITER ERROR, followed by a FILE ERROR. which completely freezes the machine. You end up losing all your tracks and hard work for nothing. It's sad because I really like the make up of the unit but I would never recommend it. Tascam has been aware of the problem for over a year and continues to distribute this faulty machine. Come up with a solution Tascam fix the software/firmware issue and you will have a great porta studio.

This is a pretty good piece of kit for knocking together demos without resorting to a computer with a minimum of fuss and if you dont want to do any low level audio editing. I have owned Roland portastudios and while they do a lot more than this box - I hardly used any of the more complex things. If all you really want to do is record multiple instruments on seperate tracks and mix and then create CD's - this does the job very well. If you want virtual tracks and lots of inbuilt effects its not so good. You can easily export to a computer if you really want to do audio editing. Having SD cards as storage is great. The chassis of this thing is built like a tank but the top is a bit too plasticky. Pros - easy to use, Sd card storage Cons - a bit limited if you need to do audio editing.

One of my main attractions with Tascam is the quality of build and the quality of sound which for the price compared to the competition is great. Recordings are clear and there is a clarity and cleaness that seperates the tracks that is not always the case with other manufacturers. Recording is simple if you used to multi-tracks, I managed to lay a few tracks without even looking at the manual which is nice. Its easy to drop backing tracks and wavs from the PC to the recorder also which is very welcome. The Zoom mulitracks are an example where this is not the case! Okay I've not done a great deal on it yet but what I have done I'm very happy with and love the no lag with hard disk recording that PCs are very tempermental with, despite what input options you use in terms of cards and external interfaces. I would recommend this machine to anyone after a good sound rather than menus of worthless options!
