Boss BR-800 Digital Recorder

Boss have announced the BR-800 as a new release for 2010. It is a Portable digital recorder that can be battery powered for ultimate flexibility when it comes to recording on the move. If you need a studio outside the studio, the BR-800 delivers. With an EZ Recording Wizard, even those who have never made a recording before can use the BR-800. It even has a built-in stereo mic so you can get ideas down quickly without any loss of inspiration.

You can record up to 4 simultaneous tracks, and playback 8, all from a single SD card. The BR800 has built in effects from the best effect makers in the world - Boss - including guitar, vocal and acoustic guitar effects. The BR-800 is bundled with Sonar 8.5 LE Software so you can also enjoy the flexibility of computer editing once you do get back to the studio.

For composers, engineers and songwriters who need a home from home studio, the BR-800 does everything and you don't even need to find a plug socket!

Here's what Boss say about the BR-800

BOSS continues its top-selling tradition of portable, affordable multi-track recorders with the new BR-800, a battery powered studio to go. The sleek new design is made possible by touch-sensor switches and SD-card media recorder. Up to four tracks can be recorded simultaneously with eight tracks of simultaneous playback, plus an additional stereo track dedicated to the built-in rhythm generator. The BR-800's powerful onboard effects processor includes GT-10/10B effects, VE-20 vocal effects and harmonies, and COSM-based acoustic guitar body modelling. The EZ Recording feature interactively guides you through the recording process. A stereo microphone is also built into the BR-800 for instant "Song Sketch" recording. No matter where you are, you'll never take risks getting your ideas down with the BR-800.

  • 4-track simultaneous recording, 8-track simultaneous playback plus dedicated stereo rhythm track playback
  • EZ Recording function interactively guides you through the recording process
  • Powerful guitar, bass, and vocal effects derived from BOSS's flagship processors
  • Song Sketch recording for quick stereo capture in WAV format
  • Built-in advanced drum machine with editor software
  • Functions as a USB audio interface and DAW controller
  • Cakewalk SONAR 8.5 LE recording software with full audio loops and backing tracks included
  • Built-in stereo condenser microphone for instant recording
  • Sleek new interface with sensor touch
  • 1GB SD included (supports up to 32GB SDHC card)
  • Runs on six AA batteries/USB bus power/AC adaptor (included)

EZ Recording

Whether you're creating intricate, multi-layered songs or point and capture field recordings, the BR-800 makes the recording process fast and easy. Beginners will love the new EZ Recording mode that interactively guides you through the recording process. Other helpful features include the convenient Retry function, which recues automatically to fix mistakes and Song Sketch recording for instant, one-touch capture. There's also a built-in stereo condenser microphone plus a DR-880-quality rhythm generator for adding drum and percussion tracks to your songs.

Pro Effects

Enhance your recordings with the powerful BOSS effects onboard the BR-800. Many of the effects are derived from BOSS's flagship processors, including vocal effects from the VE-20; COSM guitar/bass amps and effects from the GT-10 series and modelled acoustic guitar body effects from the Martin AP-1 preamp, which imparts pro-quality miced-up sound and rich body tone to line-recorded acoustic guitar. You'll be amazed at how much processing power is built into this little device, and how great the effects sound.

Mobility

You can power the BR-800 from the included AC adaptor, or, for ultimate mobility, it can be powered from six AA batteries. So you can record anywhere! Stereo microphones are also built into the BR-800 for instant "Song Sketch" recordings, great for capturing song ideas (acoustic guitar and vocals, for example) from any location.

USB Enhanced

The BR-800's USB compatibility enables a variety of functionality with your computer. Connected to a PC, the BR-800 will function as a USB audio interface for recordings that utilise the internal effects. The BR-800 can also function as a control surface for DAW software.

Andertons SD Card Information

Most SD cards will work with the BR800. If you need a higher GB count then you can use an SDHC card. Whilst Roland don't name any brands of card specifically, it is never a bad idea to go for a branded product.

Love this bit of kit. I'm not one to sit in front of a computer and fiddle with software. I prefer to just get my ideas down, but a beat to it and share with the rest of the band. This BR enables me to do just that. It took me a while to get my head round it and the percussion can be tricky to program. The easiest thing to do is use the software that comes with it and link up the Br with a PC. I haven't tried Sonar yet but it looks like it provides all the basic needs for producing simple home recordings.

I bought one of these and very dissapointed with it. Too complicated for my little brain and instruction manual IMO is poorly written. Going to go to Andertons to buy a tascam

The boss br 800 does what it says and is a great recording tool. I would have prefered a more informative manual,( it does assume a lot)in that you need to be conversant with Daw and the usb interface. Luckily I have a 24 year old whizz kid son to show me the wav conversions and sonar stuff.it will probably be another couple of months to grasp the rhythm editor and vocal effects to full potential but otherwise the recording side is becoming very straight forward.Has the potential to produce a CD quality album.

Whats not to like ... the unit is small and portable, makes multichannel digital recordings from any source (the mike section is very cool) has a ton of good quality effects - and even a basic drum kit. The kit is programmable so in theory you COULD get any beat you want. I guessyou can also import data too as there is a USB connect. ie BR-800 can act as a control surface for PC work and the free software (inc Cakewalk)

I nearly marked down the stars coz of the crappy touch controls. It works; but mistakes are constantly caused by this. The makers are aware of this and allow you to "turn down" the sensitivity. However the unit is so good otherwise its 5 stars all the way man.

As an amateur recorder artist this thing has introduced me to tool that are used within the industry. I have been happy with all the features I have used on this device and I still have not used all the features on this amazing piece of kit yet. I have been using it to record live vocals and guitar for YouTube videos and it has served me well so far. After a little experimentation with all the features it becomes easy to navigate and use all the effects. I'm sure there are a better ones out there but for this price range I would be difficult to rival

Great piece of recording kit specifically aimed at Guitarists. Easy to use and capable of getting great results out of the box. For some of the features you will need to use the software and link BR800 to a PC but as yet I've not needed this. Excellent for musicians wanting a straight forward good quality basic digital recorder.....I'm really enjoying this!!

I've given this product the lowest rating possible because the claim that it is the "ultimate portable recording solution" is just so misleading. Track editing is practically non-existant on this recorder. Features as simple as "marker points" to copy/paste are missing. When I contacted Roland UK they simply fobbed me off by saying that they had included Sonar LE (in order to permit the use of basic missing features??). So this unit is the "ultimate portable solution" as long as you have a PC/Mac/laptop in tow. Oh and it is NOT an 8-track. It is a four mono and two stereo track. Also what ever you record on to the Stereo tracks cannot be unpaired (e.g. you cannot pan the stereo recording L. & R. ) It's just an expensive toy...pass.

As soon as I took the br800 out of the box the first thing that struck me was how compact this unit is. But don't let the size of it put you off, because even though its small it packs a fenomenal punch. The unit is very user friendly and its quite easy to ignore the instructions and start navigating through the options all by yourself. However, after spending a good few hours playing with the drum machine alone I decided to get the book out and the dividends where instant. With an easy to find page marking system the book becomes a useful tool when you start recording. The quality of the sound is amazing and the recordings are great. Even the in built microphones are amazing. Has you can see I'm impressed with the equipment but this is my first recording unit and I have no professional background, so from an amateur point of view this is an amazing bit of kit!

A simple to use 8 track recorder that gets you laying down tracks in next to no time. Easy to follow instructions allow recording without fuss. There is even an EZ mode for those that are not all that familiar with the recording process. I especially like the availability of virtual tracks that allow several retakes without the loss of previous performance. There is an in built drum machine and there are plenty of input possibilities. The on board effects are great for guitar and vocals alike. Upon registering the product I got a 3 year warranty and I was sent a free SD card through the post!

First let me say thanks for the excellent customer service and prompt dispatch of the Boss Br 800.

On receiving the THE MACHINE I plugged in and recorded a quick 4 trk demo with the aid of the manual and was instantly impressed at how intuitive and user friendly this unit is.

The quality of all on board effects and rhythms are grade A

    .

I took the BR 800 to a rehearsal and set it up in sketch mode using the intrenal microphones, being in a heavy rock band I wondered how the unit would cope and for the purpose of the recording (reference only) I was pleasantly surprised.

When I got home that evening I fired up THE MACHINE transferred the rehearsal to CD and the band now have a very useable reference archive.

I have not yet had a chance to get to grips with all the software but look forward to expanding the vast capacity of the BR 800 both as a stand alone unit and in conjunction with the PC/Mac (whatever).

Many thanks Boss X, this has give me as much joy as did the purchase of my beloved Parker Nite Fly

    Lee of B-O-S

PS. My next purchase will be a 32Gig SD card (then the world will be mine Hahahahaha).
