Roland have implemented the GR-55 in an intuitive and intelligent way that both guitarists and bassists will appreciate. It does not come across as a gimmick because the way the guitar triggers the synthesised sound is smooth, and the GR-55's sounds are of a very high standard.

The possibilities with the GR-55 are endless. Create new sonic textures today, and explore instruments and sounds you would have never thought of using before. The GR-55 is the guitarist's path into the world of synthesis.

Here's what Roland say about the GR-55 Guitar Synthesizer

Take an interactive tour of the GR55 including sound samples

A New Era of Sound, Power, & Performance

The Roland GR-55 is a revolution in guitar synthesis, with features never before available in any guitar processor. In terms of speed, it's the fastest ever. It's also the most accurate, thanks to newly developed pitch-detection technology. As for sound, the triple-core generator houses a world-class array of virtual guitars, basses, amps, and synth voices, enabling tones and textures that have never been heard before. Onstage or in the studio, you can instantly access the GR-55's huge library of ready-to-use sounds, from pop to rock and beyond, with quick-access category buttons. Welcome to a ground-breaking new era in guitar synthesis!

Features

  • A revolutionary fusion of guitar synthesis and powerful COSM guitar modelling
  • Up to four sound sources at a time: two PCM synth tones, plus COSM guitar modelling and normal guitar input
  • Easy to use and easy to play with hundreds of great, ready-to-use sounds for rock or pop guitarists
  • Advanced Roland technology provides superb sound quality and lightning-fast processing
  • Over 900 of Roland's latest fully editable PCM sounds, including pianos, organs, strings, vintage synths, and much more
  • COSM guitar and amp modelling
  • Two types of multi-effects engines, plus global reverb, chorus, and delay effects, and an on-board looper
  • Built-in USB audio player with foot control

New Sound Possibilities

The GR-55's powerful triple-core engine comprises two PCM synthesizers (with over 900 tones powered by the latest Roland synthesis technology) and COSM guitar modelling, featuring a virtual treasure trove of guitar, bass, amp, and synth models. Together, these combined technologies allow you to create unique, revolutionary sounds. The "Metal Synth Lead" preset, for example, combines two types of thick, brilliant synth textures with an overdriven solid-body/humbucking tone for incredible punch and power.

Lightning-Fast Tracking

Thanks to Roland's decades of research and dedication to guitar synthesizers and powerful new pitch detection technology, the GR-55 is far and away the fastest guitar synth ever. Furthermore, the COSM guitar-modelling engine needs zero detection time, allowing the GR-55 to respond instantly and exactly as you play. The GR-55 detects pitch, velocity, and behaviour for unprecedented response to your performance.

Instant Gratification

Get ready to rock … and fast! The GR-55 puts you instantly in touch with a huge library of amazing sounds, no editing required. The on-board line-up of ready-to-use presets (270, plus 297 user) takes the pain out of the process, with simple category buttons for finding the perfect sound fast. Choose from hundreds of great presets for pop, rock, and beyond, and kick-start your song or jam with unique, powerful sounds that will turn heads and raise fists.

Easy to Use

If you're new to the world of technology, fear not. The GR-55 is powerful yet extremely friendly. For customising sounds, the EZ Edit feature (made famous in the GT-10) and large LCD takes the guesswork out of the process. And for those who want to go deep, the GR-55 offers huge array of controllable parameters. Pros will appreciate the power of the GR-55 while beginners will love how quick and easy the unit is to operate.

USB Connectivity

The GR-55 conveniently bridges the guitarist to the desktop music production world with its two USB ports. The rear-panel port can be used one for MIDI/Audio data communication; the side-panel port is dedicated to real-time playback of audio files from a USB memory device (sold separately). The GR-55 provides foot control of USB audio playback so your hands never need to leave the guitar.

I have had a weekend to play with the GR-55 and have been blown away with what it can do. My advice is to watch as many of the videos on Youtube as you can stand because they will get you up and running quickly when you can take delivery.

If like me you have a guitar with an inbuilt 13 pin hexaphonic/piezo pickup find out exactly which type you have from your manufacturer and that way you can get set up and running quickly with very accurate tracking and no noticeble latency. ALso checkout the Vguitar forum for other users who have supplied their fine tuning tweeks. Similarly I spent some extra money and got my guitar to luthier to make sure it was in good shape as well. READ the manual a few times and then plug in and get going.

The only downside of buying the GR-55 without a GK3 pick-up as i did is that you don't get a 13 pin lead and you have to try and source that yourself. Roland seem to have the mandate on them but their are company's in the states making them cheaper if you have the time. I sourced mine on line and it took the best part of two weeks to arrive as there seems to be a world wide shortage.

In summing up the GR-55 was well worth the 3 month wait while Roland Taiwan got over the the japanese earthquake. ENJOY

All in all an great peice of gear. I did own a Gr-20 and the Gr-55 is so much better.

Good points - Guitar and amp sounds are much better than the VG-88. Synth sounds track really well and with the added ability to lock to chromatic scales you get less of the strange noises you get with older synth units. WAV playback through USB port which works great (did my first open mic using just the gr-55 and backing tracks)

Not so good points - When using the WAV playback you lose one of the controler pedals which limit patch control during playback (not a serious issue), No official computer editer (there is a unofficial one, have not tried it yet). No option to have effects looped through the Guitar out (this really is a limitation at the moment because you can't send the guitar with effect to you amp and the synth sounds to a P.A. meaning you either need a second effects unit for your amp or everything goes through the P.A. (most people would rather use there guitar amp for the guitar sounds) I have taken this up with Roland and have been told that it is something they have thought of and will hopefully be in a software upgrade.

One thing I have not tested yet is using the USB midi out to control my computer software (reason record Duo) I hope this works well as I am not a good keyboard player.

Everyone that has seen and heard the unit so far have been really impressed and amazed at the amount of sounds you can get out of the box.

And all this for what I think is a very good price from Roland, with there normal pricing policy I would expect a unit like this to cost twice the price. (yes Roland gear costs alot but generally it's well worth it)

If you have been thinking about getting this unit don't delay, you won't be disapointed..
