Emu 49 SHORTboard Keyboard

The latest keyboard in EMU's arsenal features multi-timbral synthesis, multi-voice sampling and true wireless capability thanks to a built in transmitter. With the Shortboard, EMU eliminate all the previous problems of needing external MIDI gear thanks to the banks of classic instruments and high quality sounds. Then they got rid of the wires too! With the help of a Pipeline Receiver (sold separately) your EMU keyboard can be used with no wires making it perfect for the stage, and convenient for the home and studio.

Here's what Emu say about the SHORT Board 49

The E-MU SHORTboard 49 is a professional 49-note USB/MIDI instrument ideal for the stage or studio. The instrument sports an all new E-MU synthesizer chip capable of 16-part multitimbral, 128-voice professional sample playback with 32-bit reverb and chorus effects and comes packed with a 64MB sound set that includes a General Midi bank and a complete range of classic keyboard sounds such as: Grand Pianos, Electric Pianos, B3s, Clavinets, and Solina-Moog-OB-Prophet-Juno-TB synthesizer leads and basses.

Easy to setup and use

Designed to operate as a stand alone instrument, the SHORTboard 49 can operate on USB, wall adapter, or even battery power. To use with a computer, just plug in and go! With the Kensington slot and dual headphone jacks, the SHORTboard 49 is ideal for academic and institutional settings.

The SHORTboard 49 also has a built in wireless transmitter that, when combined with an E-MU PIPEline receiver and a set of batteries, enables a totally wireless playing experience! (PIPEline is E-MU's new wireless stereo transceiver system designed for musicians.)

The 49 key EMU Shortboard has two soundbanks, 64 top quality keyboard sounds and 128 average quality GM sounds. Emu's Rhodes is uncannily accurate while both the grand piano and strings are among the best I have played. Build quality is high and layout is easy to follow although on reading the manual I discovered another 64 EMU pre-sets which are combination sounds. The EMU sounds can be tweaked and saved using the synth controls but not the GM sounds.

As a MIDI controller it is rather basic but as a stand alone keyboard it is excellent.

Gripes: no transposer, a bit of hum when powered from the PC and, when using the GM sounds, a good thump on the keys can cause it to jump to a neighbouring GM sound!

Still if this one went walk about, I would buy another one.
