Thanks to the success of the Blackstar Series One 100 and 200 heads, Blackstar have refined their design in the S1-1046L6 model to suit high gain players even better than before. As the name suggests, the Series 1 1046L6 is loaded with 4 6L6 power tubes and is voiced to be as clear and tight as possible at high gain and low tuning.

Here's what Blackstar say about the S1-1046L6

The S1-104 is a 4 channel 100W valve head. The 6L6 version has a new look and is voiced to appeal to the modern high gain metal player.

  • 100 Watt valve head with DPR
  • 3 x ECC83, 1 x ECC82, 4 x 6L6 power valves
  • 4 channels (footswitchable)
  • Clean channel with Warm (Plexi) and Bright (Class A) modes
  • Crunch channel with Crunch and Super Crunch modes
  • Two overdrive channels with high and low output dampling
  • Two ISF equipped tone controls
  • Presence and Resonance controls
  • Master Volume
  • Series effects loop
  • MIDI switching
  • Speaker emulated output

Following quite a bit of online research, and after a day of trying-out a range of mainly Marshall and Blackstar amps at Andertons, I chose this amp as it was head and shoulders above the rest, including the new YJM100.

Having got the 6L6 home I'm now seriously impressed - it's got guts, especially when warmed-up. The tone controls work really well, so my Pearly Gates loaded Les Paul sounds totally excellent, the Nailbomb loaded BFG is also very good (just back-off the mids a little), the EMG loaded Zakk Wylde sounds a little thin without totally changing all of the settings, and the Tremonti loaded PRS tuned to Eb is absolutely searing - totally blown away by it - and the most biting chords ever!

Key thing for me is that the individual notes remain defined and don't get muddy, even within heavily distorted power or open chords

I reckon that the clean channel is quite fender twin, the crunch/super-crunch channel quite marshall jcm800/900 and the OD channels quite mesa-boogie dual rectifier. I have the ISF on the clean/crunch set slightly towards the british voicing, and the OD set slightly US, the DPR set to 50W and both the resonance and presence set to just over half to really bring forward sound from the 1960A 4x12 cab.

A very flexible amp. Hope this helps!

This Amp is fantastic, I play styles ranging from Jazz requiring a great clean tone to Prog Rock and Death Metal and this amp can do them all. Even playing on the overdrive channel I can play fully extended chords and have all the notes ring out where as many other amps seem to muddy the notes together and sound poor.

The great thing is that the amp is both powerful enough to play larger venues whilst the Power control allows me to turn it down and use it at home. The emulated output is also very useful allowing a quick set if I neeed to record a new demo or just lay down some ideas.

So to sum up this amp has a great tone and feature that are truly useful all for a great price.

An awesome sounding beast... more gain on tap than i know what to do with, a decent range of flexibility offered by the tone controls and switching options, and the grunt of that 6L6 power stage is unbelievable.... through a 4x12 this thing offers tectonic plate moving levels of low end "whoomph" .

for metal, and other heavier tones, very little else touches it..... it can clean up enough to be a good straight forward rock amp as well, but it's never going to be a purist jazz blues machine....

for the job we need it for, it is superb, and we're very happy to have it , and very grateful for the superb service offered by Andertons on supplying it, and Blackstar for back up on a query about the footswitch.

thanks all round guys .... you're all stars!!!
