Alesis DM10 Pro Kit Electronic Drum Kit

Following on from the other popular models in Alesis' DM range - the new DM10 is set to break the mould for amazing musicality and variety in an affordable, complete package.

One of the biggest achievements of this kit is the DM10 module itself. It features several acoustic kits from some of the world's best sets - so really you're getting several drum kits for your hard earned cash! Each sound set is carefully multisampled in great resolution and detail, and you can really tell when you play because the whole timbre and resonance of the sample changes depending on how hard you play, offering a highly authentic playing experience.

In addition, Alesis have paid particular attention to detail to the feel of the kit, with specially designed dual zone Mylar heads for a real musical response, and Surge cymbals which feature a cleverly designed, dampened metal alloy that gives you all the advantages of electronic cymbals with the feel and look of real ones!

Reviews

"The module is very clearly laid out and it passed my 'if it's a good product I shouldn't need to read the manual except for really random stuff' test with flying colours."

"I found most of the preset kits to have a little too much reverb for my taste, but as everything is editable, it was a quick job to lower it and save the kit."

"I can't fault the module at all. For the price it's superb - it doesn't do anything too flash, and what it does, it does very well. It's a really good mid range module that would cater for quite a few more serious players as well."

"To sum up, if you want a really good electronic kit with great samples and change from a thousand pounds, this is definitely one to look at and possibly the leader of the pack at the moment. The recording functions and the simplicity are real winners."

Review from MikeDolbear.com. Read the full review here.

"The pads are genuinely sensitive to speed and weight of stroke. The degrees of this can be finely tuned with the aid of 15 velocity curves, each of which can in turn be edited to suit your style, strength and required sound. It is definitely woth checking this out at an early stage as it has vital impact on the way you communicate on the kit."

"With a bit of time to customise your set and establish the appropriate sensitivity, playing the DM10 could feel as natural as playing an acoustic kit... Whichever way you look at it, the Alesis DM10 Pro Kit is a lot of fun, at the very least. At its best, it is a valuable practice tool, a worthwhile teaching aid, highly recordable and an opportunity to inspire your playing an broaden your musical mind."

"Upbeats: Easy to customise sound and feel; Natural aesthetic of cymbals; Vast range of sounds available; Very attractive price point."

"Downbeats: None"

Here's what Alesis say about the DM10 Pro Kit

The DM10 Pro Kit is the product of extensive research and development efforts. Based around the completely new DM10 sound module, the DM10 Pro Kit features Alesis' RealHead drum pads, SURGE Cymbals made of real cymbal alloy and an ErgoRack mounting system.

DM10 MODULE

You will immediately notice the DM10 module's outstanding sound quality. This new drum sound module contains true drum, cymbal and percussion sounds, built from real samples of classic studio drums and prized cymbals. Drummers will find some of the most in-demand acoustic drum sounds from legendary drum brands, a huge arsenal of top producers' go-to snare drums, real American, Canadian, Chinese, and Turkish cymbals, and a choice selection of classic drum machine and electronic percussion sounds that have fueled the biggest hit records.

Discerning ears will notice that each sound is actually a series of different samples; multiple dynamic-level samples and articulations are all built in so as you play harder and softer, the drum or cymbal changes its timbre, not just its volume. This engineered realism is known as Dynamic Articulation;, an Alesis exclusive. You can play with or without reverb for different room sounds and enjoy a wide variety of rimshots, rim clicks and different stick-placement sounds on the cymbals. For example, a hi-hat's sound depends on a number of factors: how open or closed the pedal is, how hard it is struck, and other variables resulting in 40 different sounds - plus foot chick and heel splash.

The DM10 module not only has a breathtaking collection of sounds onboard, it is also the world's first drum-sound module that enables you to load new sound sets via USB connection from your computer. This means that your sounds will always stay fresh, current and cutting edge.

You can also use the DM10 as a trigger-to-MIDI interface for performing and tracking with software drum modules such as BFD, Toontrack and Reason, among others. For practice, you can play along with the tracks in the DM10's internal sequencer, mix in an iPod or other MP3 player and play along.

The DM10 module has 12 trigger inputs, perfect for creating custom configurations. The DM10's top-panel mixer gives you easy access to creating custom mixes.

REALHEAD DRUM PADS

The DM10 Pro Kit has Alesis' acoustic-feeling RealHead pads in eight and 10-inch sizes. The dual-zone pads feature real mylar drumheads and real triple-flanged counterhoops for the feel you demand. The snare and tom pads are dual zone, enabling you to perform rimshots, rim clicks or assign other sounds such as wind chimes, cymbals, gongs and cowbells on the tom rims.

SURGE CYMBALS

The DM10 Pro Kit comes with premium SURGE Cymbals, the only serious choice in electronic cymbals. The kit includes a 12-inch SURGE Hi-Hat Cymbal, a 13-inch SURGE Crash Cymbal with choke and a 16-inch SURGE triple-zone Ride Cymbal with choke. Comprised of a genuine alloy cymbal coated with a clear sound-dampening layer, SURGE Cymbals feel like acoustic cymbals because they begin life as just that. The Crash and Ride cymbals feature large choke strips on the undersides for even more attention to accurate cymbal control. The SURGE Ride also features multiple-zone triggering on the bell, face and edge. The SURGE Hi-Hat Cymbal offers continuously variable control using the included pedal.

ERGORACK

The DM10 Pro Kit features an ergonomically curved, chrome-plated ErgoRack.

It is heavy gauge, heavy duty and supremely adjustable. The ErgoRack is large enough to enable you to add on additional drum pads and SURGE Cymbals. You can even mount acoustic drums, cymbals, and percussion instruments on this roadworthy system.

It employs standard one and one-half-inch tubing for compatibility with virtually all drum manufacturers' rack hardware. The rack features quick-release, metal clamps for fast setup and tear down. The Crash and Ride cymbals mount on large, knurled boom cymbal arms that are height adjustable right in the rack down tubes. The DM10 Pro Kit comes with tom mounts that enable freely adjustable mounting. Drummer-friendly wing-screws are present on all important rack clamps and pads for ease of adjustment without reaching for a drum key. The drum pads mount on standard 10.5mm L-rods with low-slip, knurled mounting surfaces.

The DM10 Pro Kit is the new flagship of the Alesis electronic percussion line. We've raised - and curved - the bar with the DM10 Pro Kit.

I didnt know what to expect when i purchased this kit, knowing nothing about elec drums. had the kit set up in about 1.5 hours,

updated the module. and bashed away. Quite a bit of crosstalk, you need to dig in and set up each drum and cymbal individually , its a good learning curve to do this. The thing that made this kit appealing was the cymbals looking like real cymbals [not lumps of coal on sticks] this kit looks great in my smallish studio.I think this is a great kit excellent value for the money. Also andertons service is superb had a prob with a cymbal, they had a new one sent from alesis in three days well done five stars for that

The DM10 Pro Kit is nicely made and a pleasure to use and look at. I'm a beginner-drummer but have reasonable experience with studio equipment including midi stuff. I have a few criticisms which stop this being a 5 star review: The pad clamps do not grip the shiny chrome tubes and so keep dropping down. The plastic clamp nuts don't look sturdy enough to tighten really strongly. Secondly, the closed hi-hat and ride cymbal sounds are not very good - and there's not much range in the available presets. Although the dynamic articulation is very good and clever, the actual sounds lack conviction. Getting two sounds from the ride is nice but it takes a bit of careful setting up to get it usable. I get better from my Yamaha XG midi sound module. Thirdly the crash cymbal doesn't always trigger first time - which is not good when going for a good bash! This seems to be software rather than a triggering problem, as after a few strikes it starts to work fine.

All in all I'm very pleased with the kit, and it allows me to make some reasonable noises, while the feel of the pads is pretty good allowing good rolls and flams.

This kit arrives well packaged so that all pieces are well protected. Assembly is relatively straightforward to achieve but you shoudl have the manual in front of you. the right-hand arm which holds the "floor" tom is long an d allows you to add an additional head or cymbal at a later stage.

The kit has an excellent feel on the drum heads, but the surge cymbals seem a bit odd at first. The sounds in the brain were disappointing to me after using BFD2 for so long, but taken in their own right are quite acceptable by comparison to the vast majority of drum machines. There is extensive editing of kits and kit pieces as well as a fully functioning synth module. There are numerous accompaniments ready-provided and I guess midi files could be imported.

Setup into a DAW ‘s drum software such as BFD or Session Drummer etc. is not necessarily as straightforward as one might hope in this modern day – I do not understand why Alesis think it unnecessary to provide maps for a kit with the Pro designation to all the major drum software. The process is not hard but will frustrate a lot of users.

My hope is to use this as a trigger for drummers when recording into Studio One and Sonar. That step is still to be taken but will be the acid test. Like any electronic drum kit, however expensive, drummers are not going to be hugely happy with this. The huge benefit of the Alesis DM10 is the feature-set, quality and substantial price advantage it has over Roland and Yamaha. At the discounted price I paid it’s a fine purchase but I would not have been too happy if I’d paid full price. On the other hand I’m glad I didn’t spend more on a Roland – I don’t see any real benefit with their equivalent kits.
