Gibson Les Paul 2008 Standard (Heritage Cherry Sunburst)

The new Les Paul Standard - released 1st August 2008!

Pioneered and developed with the assistance of legendary jazz-pop guitarist Les Paul, the Gibson Les Paul has become the standard by which all electric guitars are judged.

With fat rich tone and incredible sustain the Les Paul guitar lends itself to every style and generation of music.

From the sweetest jazz to the heaviest rock and metal the Les Paul is a guitar that can do it all. It is one of the most powerful and versatile instruments of all time.

What Gibson say about the 2008 Les Paul Standard

Improving a legend isn't easy, but it's happened. Introducing Gibson USA's 2008 Les Paul Standard-an elegant revision of a true classic, with upgrades and new features that make it the best Les Paul Standard ever produced.

Based on consumer feedback and a drive to uphold and enhance the legacy of the Les Paul Standard, Gibson USA's 2008 model sets a new guitar benchmark for excellence and achievement.

It begins at the neck, which features an enlarged neck tenon for maximum wood contact, and a new asymmetrical neck profile that makes it one of the most comfortable and playable necks ever offered.

Locking Grover tuners with an improved gear ratio of 18:1 are also a first for the Les Paul.

Custom-made, gold-plated potentiometers made by Bourns, give the 2008 Standard a new level of sonic clarity and intensity.

It's also one of the first Gibson USA models to utilize the revolutionary Plek system-a computer-controlled setup that carefully measures and dresses each fret, accurately measuring the height between the fingerboard and each string, virtually eliminating string buzz and providing unbeatable playability.

A set of Gibson's Burstbucker Pro humbuckers deliver the powerful punch expected from a Les Paul, faithfully capturing the magic of Gibson's legendary PAF pickups of the 1950s.

A chambered mahogany body gives the 2008 Standard enhanced resonance, and a plain or flame maple top pays homage to the iconic Les Pauls of the late 1950s.

Other new features include TonePros' locking Nashville Tune-o-matic and stopbar tailpiece, and each guitar comes with Gibson USA's standard black snakeskin case. Play the new 2008 Les Paul Standard from Gibson USA and experience the evolution of the greatest electric guitar of all time.

I compared this to the Traditional and preferred it because it is lighter (with hollow sections in the body) and preferred the hardware. I also thought the neck suited me better although I'm not sure if this was partly because of the weight as well.

I also compared it to other Gibsons like the ES335 and variants. I liked the ES, which felt like a LP to play but with a wider body. There were some ES models that had wider necks that I didn't like.

The finish and quality on all the Gibsons is incredible and the model I have has so much depth and quilting that the guys in the shop had to check that it wasn't a plus finish.

I am used to playing a Fender Telecaster and the Gibson is very different. I have noticed that the E strings are closer to the edge of the fretboard so if you are used to doing pull-offs on the high E this is more difficult as you slip off the fret straight away - pariculary at the lower frets.

The locking jack socket takes getting used to but I can see how it is useful. On teh whole though I am very happy with it and can't stop looking at it. I just need to learn how to play better now.

The best shop in the country without a doubt, I collected the guitar from the shop and was very well looked after, nothing was a problem. The guitar is awesome, I was slightly suspicious of Gibson updating what is already a great guitar but I had shouldn't have been. The way it is made makes the acoustic sound from the body very lively, it's lighter than older Les Paul's (which is very welcome), but the sustain is as good as ever if not better. Lovin it !!

This is the guitar I thought i would never own, and now I have it I absolutely love it! Occasionally I find myself just opening the case and looking at that beautiful maple top - my wife even says it's like a work of art.

The sound is both rich and raw. Distorted on the 'treble' setting it's the definitive 60s rock sound that 's so familiar. Clean on the 'rhythm' setting gives that bluesy warmth that just makes you smile. just divine.

This is a guitar that makes you want to be a better player, and you'll look and sound better too. It's comfortable to play with the asymmetrical neck and mine was set up perfectly out of the box.

I can't recommend it highly enough, and it will last you a lifetime.

I've dreamt about owning a les paul since i started playing in 1987 and now i see why. This guitar is amazing, the finish, action and sound is fantastic. My playing has definately gone up to the next level just by switching guitars, my other guitar is an high end Strat. It just proves that the quality of instrument has a massive impact on your sound and enjoyment of playing. The only down side is you have to part with nearly to grand to achieve this, though i don't begrudge a penny of it.

When I bought the 2008 Standard I was having a hard time deciding between the Les Paul Traditional and the 2008 Standard.Having played both at considerable length through many amp set-ups, I finally went for the 2008 Les paul Standard in Heritage Cherry sunburst.I have to say I am delighted with the lighter weight, the slightly brighter sound (due to the Bursbuckers and Bournes potentiometers). The guitar is just like the Les Paul you know, love and grew up covetting!! It has all the sustain you need when you crank it and a gorgeous chimy clean sound with both pickups mixed at volume 3-4, after which she warms up a treat. The new neck carve is also a very nice touch as are the Grover locking machines.Over-all I`m delighted with the 2008 Les Paul Standard, which is a relief because at one stage, I seriously considered buying both!

I'm a long term fan of Les Pauls and have two already. The problem is that I gig in a 60's cover band and we are usually on stage for about 2.5 to 3 hours a night. Much as I love my Les Pauls the weight has stopped them from being an all-night guitar for some years now!

So what's all this about a new Les Paul Standard with a chambered body then ?

I read the magazine reviews and decided to check this out.

In the store a good selection was on display and having the Traditional model to compare with also helpful.

I was smitten with the look , weight and feel of the ebony 08 Standard. A short session in the try out booth almost made up my mind and the interest -free credit option sealed the deal.

The set up on this guitar was good but I've tweaked it a little to suit me. I've done a few gigs with it now and the old Les Paul backache is a thing of the past. This guitar actually weighs the same as my USA Standard Strat !

The sound is clear and very versatile for twin humbucker guitar and the new neck shape is fab. So there we are a Les Paul for the whole Gig !! Do try this guitar out but make sure there's room in doors for one more guitar before you leave home !
