Having well over 20 synthesizers, space is becoming tight, not to mention the expense of updating my collection.
With the change in computer processing power over the years, along with the available applications, many of which are free, I have found many VST and stand alone copies of the vintage synthesizers I currently own and also desire.
The fact that I can now have dozens of synths on my laptop is a great advantage. All that is necessary to enjoy them to their max is a midi controller and a pair of headphones.
Having used a midi interface and a full size synth in the past to control the computer, I find this impractical to cart around.
I also do an awful lot of my music in front of the telly, so space is a premium. This is the reason why I went for the Oxygen.
I initially thought of the 25 key version to begin with but, already having a 25 key micro controller, I do find myself running out of keys and am constantly stabbing at the octvae button.
At not that much more that the 25 key version, the 49 key controller seemed ideal.
It is reasonably compact in size and weighs very little. So little in fact I can comfortably sit in front of the telly with it on my knee, and the laptop on the coffee table.
Odd I know, but I have always had the telly picture in the back ground, regardless; studying, reading etc.
The advantage with the Oxygen is that it has user definable contorls with which to control your DAW. Not necessary, but important if you get fed up with constantly reaching for the laptop keyboard.
It has has direct USB connection, so no need for an additional Midi interface as well.
I also find the action very good for the price.
I have spent the summer watching the festivals on the telly and have noted a number of keyboard players now going for a laptop/contorller option; with a band recently on the telly, no names, using the Oxygen 49 key controller.
So, if you are looking for a controller and don't want to break the bank, you can do a lot worse.
