Akai LPD8 Laptop Pad Controller

The Akai LPD8 allows its users to make beats with any audio software. No matter where you are you can turn it into a beat by simply plugging the Akai LPD8 into your Mac or PC as this controller easily fits in your laptop bag or backpack so you can always have it on hand. The Akai LPD8 USB-MIDI controller has eight backlit, velocity-sensitive drum pads, eight Q-Link knobs, and four programmable memory banks. You can send note information, MIDI CCs, or program changes from the pads to software.

A must have piece of kit for producers of all genres.

Here's what Akai have to say about the Akai LPD8;

Ultra-portable production pad.

The LPD8 laptop pad controller is a USB-MIDI controller for musicians, producers, DJs and other music creators. It measures less than 13 inches across and weighs less than a pound to easily fit into a laptop case, backpack or messenger bag for extreme portability.

The LPD8 is based on Akai Professional's MPC line of iconic music production stations. Producers who love the feel of the MPC and want to work with software on their computer will find that the LPD8 gives their laptop the controls they prefer over a mouse and keyboard.

The LPD8 has eight orange light-up pads that are velocity sensitive for programming rhythmic or melodic parts. The pads can also send program-change information to software. Additionally, the LPD8 has eight assignable Q-Link knobs you can assign to virtually any parameters in their software for hands-on control.

The LPD8 works plug and play with Mac and PC and requires no software driver installation or wall power for operation. It has four memory banks for programming and recalling settings appropriate to different software programs you use.

Make music in any setting with the LPD8.

    The Akai Lpd8 pad controller is a great addition, I currently use this item along with Ableton live and it works a treat, and at a good price.

    I bought the LPD8 as I needed additional midi controller to support my live dj performance. I use its big pads to juggle hot cues and knobs to control the ammount of effects.

    The device itself is very portable, its thickness matches that of my laptop so it works really well when put close together. It uses USB connection to communicate with PC and there was no problems with drivers or installation, all happened automatically.

    Pads are not massive, but big enough to ensure comfortable use with enough space between so you won't press accidentally any other pad. The knobs are working smooth and doing their job well. The only drawback I can find and the reason why I gave only 4 stars is that the knobs are quite short and if someone has big fingers like mine, sometimes it's difficult to quickly grab and operate the knobs.

    My overall opinion on the Akai LPD8 is very positive, I'm happy I got one of these and I'm planning to get one more in near future. Highly recommended for djs and portable producers!

    10/10 - The Akai LPD8 is seriously great value for money. It does the job very, very well. I use it as a trigger and parameter console for the TRAKTOR SCRATCH DVS software system, it is awesome.

    PROs - These are typically high quality large drum pads from AKAI, they havent used cheaper components for this item. The general feel of the unit is a solid hard plastic, looks like it could take a knock or two. The knobs are shallow, this mean less leaverage on the board! The unit is 1/5 the price and size of an Allen & Heath xone 1D, making it way more portable. And when using the LEARN button in TRAKTORS MIDI mapping console the unit couldnt be easier to set up. I had a look at the bundled software & it also looks pretty good.

    CONS - eh, its not an Allen and Heath Xone 1D, but you do get way more than you pay for here. Slightly concerned about durability of mini USB socket, it does seem to be in an awkward position but now I'm just looking for flaws. Hey its not perfect but it's pretty damn close for 50 notes!!
