What Blackstar say about the HT DistX Guitar FX Pedal

The HT-DUAL offers the ultimate in high voltage valve distortion flexibility. Channel 1 has either Clean or Crunch modes so it can be used clean, as a boost or overdrive. Channel 2 gives distortion tones from super crunch right up to screaming lead.

The unique switching operation will transform a single channel vintage amp into a three channel tone machine. The ISF control takes you from 'British Valve' to 'Modern American' and anywhere in between and the no compromise speaker emulated output lets you get it all down to tape or disk.

Features

  • Genuine valve design
  • Operates at 300V HT
  • Cascaded valve gain stages
  • Responds like a valve amp
  • 2 channel operation
  • Clean, Crunch & Lead modes
  • Unique switching operation
  • Unique enhanced tone controls
  • Exclusive Infinite Shape Feature (ISF)
  • Fully equipped for stage or studio

The HT Dual is great! My requirement was to turn my Fender Blues Junior (which I use for smaller gigs and practicing)into a 3 channel amp - my other amp is a Boogie. The HT Dual does exactly that. Before purchasing the HT, I had tried many other pedals, including some of my own, but none of them had "that sound". A lot is written about the HT's range of fabulous crunch (CH1) and lead saturated tones (CH2), so you can read those reviews elsewhere. My surprise was the clean boost (CH1), which will take you from a gentle pre-amp push to a great clean lead sound, great for clean sustain and progressive jazz sounds (think Larry Carlton, Robben Ford). The emulated output is very good for direct to PA and recording (I am now going to use the pedal as an alternative to a spare live amp). A dedicated power supply is required to provide the 22V/1A. I have a Pedaltrain board and the power supply fits with velcro underneath comfortably. I only docked the HT Dual a point because of the non-standard, but required power supply. It also means for Blackstar that their customers may think twice before purchasing further pedals - each one requiring an individual power wall wart.

This is in no doubt an excellent overdrive/distortion pedal, one of the best I have used. It has an ISF control to vary from American to British type amp drives as well as the normal bass, middle and treble controls, it is built in solid metal and sturdy. Blackstar make great amps and the channel contols on them are the same which is why I got this pedal. The onboard valve produces, from a warm creamy overdrive to a full on lead solo sound. Place this in front of a clean channel valve amp and it will purr.

Wow, wow, wow and wow - what a fantastic piece of kit. I've invested in expensive boutique distortion pedals before in search of that elusive sound and what I should have really done is just buy one of these babies. I run two Roland JC 77s in stereo with a Line 6 M9 and whilst the overdrives were adequate for live work they still sounded a bit artificial. The M9 is such a great piece of kit, especially for the delays, I wanted to keep it but had to find a suitable solution for my overdrive problem. A friend lent me the superduper Blackstar distortion pedal and I loved the sound the valve gave to the JCs but it was a bit too extreme for me so I bought the Blackstar Dual which allows me to access crunchy overdrive and full on filth for solo work. The crunch channel has two modes and on clean it gives any transistor amp a genuine 'just breaking up' sound - quite thick and gutsy. Press the 'crunch' switch are we are into classic AC30 kind of territory - think overdriven May chord work - with the chorus of the JCs on full pelt it sounds great. The second channel, probably your solo channel, when set up right, will give you plently of boost, overdrive, distortion or out and out dirt - fantasic. I also really like this channel for heavily muted arpeggio work with the volume backed off a touch. In short, buy one. End of.

This device is quite amazing. I use a Gibson Les Paul through a Mesa Boogie Mark IV so I alredy had a pretty good clean and dirty rhythm sound but I really needed something in between the 2. I'd tried a number of my old analogue stompboxes but they all sounded very harsh, especially at low/mid gains. I dialled in one of the 'clean' settings from the Blackstar manual and it immediately gave me what I wanted, futhermore the other channels were also excellent with the other settings of my amp. I now have six tremendous tones at the flick of a switch which is way beyond anything I'd hoped for. It's also worth noting that the switches are click free and there is no discernable hum from the unit, even on the high gain settings. It's a truly remarkable device that I'd recommend to anyone.
