Cornford amps are designed & hand built in the UK, using the finest quality techniques for cabinet building & amp making. Andertons have been long time fans of Cornford amps - it's hard to describe exactly what it is that puts such a big smile on our faces whenever we play through one of these amps - we call it "Cornford Mojo".

Because Cornford Amps are designed & built in the UK (they get made, drive about 60 miles to Guildford & then you buy it!) they are incredibly good value when compared to similarly built amps from America. Typically on US hand built amps, there will be  shipping, duty & a UK distribution margin added to the price - this will generaly add about 50% onto the selling price. So a Cornford amp that sells for about £1000 will be equivalent in terms of build quality to a US made amp costing around £1500!

Please have a look in our user reviews section (see below) to hear from genuine customers who have bought Cornford amps. Without exception the reviews are incredibly positive.

We made some videos with Rob Chappers to show you a little bit more about how Cornford amps are made. Click the links in the video below to find out what goes into making an amp of this class!

Here's what Cornford say about the Hurricane

HURRICANE OVERVIEW:
Amplifier type: Combo
Wattage: 20 Watts
Speaker: Celestion Vintage 30
Reverb: Yes
Features: FX loop

The Cornford Hurricane is the big brother of the original Harlequin. This is the amp you need when you want all that sweet tone, but at a more gig-friendly volume. Its compact size and light weight - due to its pine cabinet - make it ideal for easy transport and modest stages, whilst making no tonal compromises.

Hurricane - Story
The reason why we have designed and built the Hurricane was purely because so many of our Cornford players asked us to. There seems to be so much interest in 20 wattish vintage valve amps that can really be cranked to get that sweet "on the edge" tone, but at club volume levels, that we had to make our own.

The one thing that we've added over those lovely vintage amps is a huge dollop of Cornford dirt (should you want it!) and if you don't want to revel in that creamy filth it's got a tonne of clean headroom plus that lovely valve powered reverb.

SWITCHABLE POWER VALVE TYPES - OCTAL OR 9 PIN

Like its baby brother, the Harlequin, the one that lives in the studio, you can really drive the output stage hard but this time you can gig it too.

The Hurricane is a hand-built, point-to-point wired amp - "no PCBs of any sort" insists Paul.

The reverb and effects loops are both entirely valve driven.

THE HURRICANE HAS HI AND LO INPUTS AND FX LOOP

Guitarist Magazine gave this amp a 5 out of 5 review & awarded the Hurricane with a "Guitarists Choice" award.

THE HURRICANE HAS REAL SPRING REVERB

Guitarrista Spain also gave the Hurricane its 5 Star Award.

The Cornford Hurricane combo has also been awarded...

Guitar Magazine UK * Amp of the Year 2002

Guitarist UK * Best UK Product 2002

Gitarist Germany * 5 Star Tip Award

What Guitar UK * Best Amp in Class

... and the Guitar Player USA Editors Pick Award

Return/Send (effects loop send and return. This is a series effects loop send level is - 6dbv. Treat this as the normal input); Lo Input (this is a lower impedance of - 6db sensitivity. N.B. When both inputs are in use they are both low sensitivity); Gain (simultaneously controls the 1st and 2nd gain stages via a tandem pot); Reverb (this controls the level of the reverb effect. With the reverb knob turned fully anti clockwise, this is the same as turning the reverb off with the supplied footswitch: i.e. You don't need the footswitch to turn the reverb off); Bass (adjusts low frequency response of pre-amp); Middle (adjusts frequencies around 500hz in the mid-range, which are very guitar friendly; unlike most amps you can dial mid-range and it works); Treble (adjusts high frequency response of pre-amp); Master (adjusts overall output level); On / Off Switch (mains power switch for the amplifier); Mains neon power on indicator.

Fantastic range of sounds, from clean to full on dirt, all at the turn of the Gain knob. The overdrive sound is one of the best I've heard, and the amp is loud for just 20 watts. It's very difficult to switch off - one of those bits of kit that makes you want to keep on playing.

Very big and very heavy for a 20 watt combo. Cornford proudly mentions the heavy steel chassis... hmm. I could live with the weight, but the sound was too gritty and bass-light, it lacked the sweetness I like, though I imagine someone needing a cutting rock sound might enjoy that. So unfortunately the amp had to go back, c'est la vie...

Bought the Cornford Hurricane 20W 1x12 Combo for my son on his birthday. We live in sweden so we couldnt get it here thats why we orderd it from Andertons. The sound is just perfect, we compared it with my Orange Tiny Terror with an Orange PPC212-OB 2x12" Open Back Cabinet. The sound on the Cornford was so much clearer in every way and still it was tougher and rawer if you wanted but still clear, i cant explain it you must hear for yourself. Its worth the price, clearly :-))

The gain control didn't work on the Hurricane until 1/4 of the way up and the amp had exceptional background noise - things I certainly didn't expect from a hand wired boutique amplifier at this price point.

The amp was returned in exchange for a completely different make of amplifier.

Wow - so they say it sounds good and it does. All the harmonic richness and lively tones with extremely usable EQ at 20 watts easily loud enough to match our drummer and plenty still there ..

The tones are all top quality and you can go in with gain and it still cleans up on the guitar volume and when the power amp works hard it's "that sound".

Would recommend for anybody looking for a great tone that will see you through the whole show - add a few pedals and mix in the onboard valve reverb - WOW!
