I've had all sorts of amps and rigs over the years, from Marshall stacks, rack mounted systems, a recent Fender DeVille and have also built valve amps from scratch, all in search of 'that sound'. I've just found it in the AC30. This amp is really versitile whilst remaining very simple to use. The clean sounds are rich and vibrant. The crunch/bite sounds (just on the edge of break up) are perfect for great bluesy/rock leads and when you wind up the gain it gets pretty serious. I play a Gibson Les Paul so the input signal strength is quite high, giving a bit of help to the gain. The origonal tone of the guitar doesn't get lost and the sound never sounds processed. The spring reverb is one of the best I've ever heard on an amp and the on board vibrato is a great addition that gives that little bit of extra interest for occasional use. Before buying the amp I read a lot of reviews with people being concerned about how loud the amp is. This is a loud amp. It will be perfect for gigging in pubs, clubs and other small/medium sized venues. Most venues will have a PA to mike the amp anyway these days, so it'll be fine even in some of the larger places. When using the amp at home, it is possible to get a great sound at a reasonable 'bedroom' volume that won't upset the wife/neighbours. Yes, the sound does improve if you wind the amp up, as any valve amp will, so if you want that amazing 'pushed to the limit' valve sound in your living room, buy a 1 to 5 watt valve amp and turn it up. If you want something that will be great at home, great at rehersals and amazing for gigs, covering just about all eventuallities, it will be difficult to beat the AC30. I tried the amp directly against the AC15 and in my view the 30 sounds better. I've also been trying various effects boxes incuding OD, delays, copressors, etc and that all works fine and sounds great. Very pleased I bought this amp, amazed at the tone I get just plugging straight in and with the different sounds available. The AC30 has always had a reputation for being one of the origonal greats, now I know why. Wish I'd bought one years ago.
